Excerpt:

D’Elia, a former TV producer for CNBC, suffered burns on 80 percent of his body and also sustained injuries to his skull and brain. At least two parts of the exploding vape pen were removed from his cranium, the Pinellas County medical examiner told the Tampa Bay Times.

D’Elia was smoking an unregulated smok-E Mountain Mech Works vape pen before he died. The pen does not come with safety features to ensure the device doesn’t overheat, according to an online product description.
My husband is having a fit as he read this article. Don’t most mods have overheating protection these days?

Not if he was using a mech, which he was. The maker of the mech mod was named in one article I read.
So sad.

Most vapers don't use the mechs. The ones most of us buy are the ones that do have battery protections and cut offs, etc.

Thank you for your response. I don’t use mechs which I hope will calm hubby after showing him this thread. I knew I’d find the proper answer here. You guys are the best!

This is the FIRST vaping related death, and it was because unsafe equipment was given to a new vaper, and also I think the batteries may not have been genuine either.

Hopefully your husband will become less alarmed once he finds out more. Battery safety for SURE is important, regulated or mech mod. However, most regulated mods have safety features to prevent such things from happening. No new vaper should have been sold a mech (IMO) but it does happen.
