When I first get a flavor I make a 3ml batch of zero nic 50pg/50vg blend and add 30% flavor by volume. For me its all about the flavor. I then test vape this to determine the base flavors inherent character.

...

WOW... Starting out with 30% Flavor. You do like it Strong!

30% of which brand of flavoring are you using? 30% of a concentrate would be aweful. I have noticed that, at least the few flavors I have, PA can go anywhere from 10 - 20%. I guess if you use a lot of VG you may need the extra flavor. I use 80/20 PG/VG and can easily vape up my room and still have a strong throat hit. I order a lot from juicyvapor.com and they mix it at 80/20, which I really like. I think the juice I've bought from vapor4life is kind of liquidy. It bubbles and splashes more. I seem like I swollow a lot of juice, even with dripping 2 drops on an atty. Juicyvapor has a great consistency I like. I wish I could match their taste.

I'm making test batches so I can evaluate the strength of the actual individual flavors. The finished product can be anywhere from 10-30%. The Lorann's 'natural' line as well as many of the naturally flavored ones from FlavorWest/VaporRenu are not nearly as strong as their artificially flavored counterparts. Also if I am using a high VG ratio, the additional flavor percentage helps overcome the VG's inherent lack of flavor transport.

I use a 1-10 scale when evaluating my base flavors for 'accuracy'(does it really taste like pineapple?), 'candy'(does it taste like a hard candy of that flavor or like the actual fruit or flavor), strength, and for sweetness. This allows me to make a more accurate finished product, and minimize waste. If I'm making a cocktail type flavor (like a mojito or mimosa) I'd like it to be a highly accurate, low candy, low sweetness rated flavor. If I'm making milkshake type flavors then a higher candy and sweetness rating might work better. I have about 20 Vapor Renu flavors, 20 FlavourArt flavors, 40 Perfumer's/Flavorer's Apprentice flavors, and the balance being LorAnns, FlavorWest, or Ecigexpress Signature flavors. I also don't do tobacco or menthol, so most of my flavors are fruit, chocolate, cream, candy, and coffee type flavors.

The extra VG explains it. I just picked up some Watkins extract from Wal Mart. It's ingredients are: Propylene glycol, water, alcohol (25%), artificial flavor, caramel color. I know the caramel color probably has glucose in it, so I'm using it sparingly. But for $1.69 for 2 ounces, it seems to work awesome. I mix some Rum with some TPA's Cinnamon and the flavor just coats my mouth. The strawberry isn't as good as Madvapes 18mg, but it's not bad at all. I don't taste just the PG. I think that was probably the biggest issue was I may not have been using enough flavor, even though the calculator said to use x drops. I'll try this Watkins stuff out for a bit.

No shipping, got it today on sale for a $1.69. If it doesn't kill my atty I think it's a pretty fair substitute. I'm using between 15 - 20% flavor, so my nic level is probably close to 11 - 12 down from 18mg.

Anyone think this Watkins approach a bad idea? I'd like to hear your thoughts.

I'm in the same boat. My iPod touch is too old to download apps and since I'm "Android Represent" (lol) I don't haven an iPhone. There are a ton of calculators out there, but I use the spreadsheet one (titled E-Juice Calculator for recipes v13 if you want to Google it). It has a ton of recipes built in already and you can save your own as you are mixing.

I'm still in the novice stage building up supply but it's multipurpose to change nic levels and such. I've seen the iPhone app and would be great, but then I'd have to go with an iPhone (no offence but I don't like to upgrade every 6 months - LOL).

LorAnns isn't 'bad' flavor its just IMHO 'plain'. It's also flavoring made mostly for candy so it has a 'candy' type flavor rather than an accurate one. YMMV. I haven't tried Capella's because, well, I have a problem paying $14 an ounce for flavouring especially because they really don't offer as many flavors as Perfumer's/Flavorer's Apprentice or FlavourArt which I can import from Italy for about half the price.

One of the more sucessfull DIY'ers out there jdvorr hosts a DIY video webcast over at ElixirTV.com on Thursday nights @ 10pm EST I believe, and there are a lost of us who regularly attend, including many vendors like onestopdiyshop.com owner kimerpuff. We have a lot of giveaways and its a great place to get DIY info if you are new or just want to know what other DIY'ers are doing out there. You all should come by.

I just tried my first DIY mix:

creating 5ml - 18mg

36mg nic juice 100% VG - 2.5ml - 50 drops
VG - 1.4ml - 28 drops
water - 5% - 6 drops
flavor - 15% - 16 drops (all lorann - straight out of the bottle) - english toffee / 6 drops - caramel / 3 drops - bavarian cream / 5 drops - fairy floss / 2 drops

Let sit 10 minutes, lid off.

Filled 510 cartomiser, smells nice but no flavour, slightly sweet on the exhale, smells a little toasted.
Filled ego-t tank - no flavour at all, smells sweetish.

Where have I gone wrong? I have only vaped tobacco blends, sweetest being ry4. This just isn't anything really? Good vapor and throat hit but that's about it?

TPA I usually do between 10-20 %. I find if I mix them too strong they taste perfumey/soapy so I have been starting at 10% and going from there. Keep in mind that steeping will change your flavors. It seems to be a controversial subject, some say a day, some say a month, some say a hot water bath will speed things up, and it depends on the flavor. I think VG takes longer also, not completely sure though, I am just starting out too, just repeating what I have read!

Omit the water, add some PG, get FlavourArt flavorings (instead of Lorann flavorings), and allow your mixtures to steep for at least a week (rather than only 10 minutes). The flavor is even much better if allowed to steep for a month.

I do clean my palate in between test batches.. water, crusty bread, saltines or sherbet/sorbet are great for this! Think of it like fine wine tasting :)

Thats some of the best advice right there if u think its close to what u want but needs a little something wait an hr eat or drink something then add a little of whatever...also remember vg is slightly sweet so calculate that in not to say u wont need sweetener but it does add some

check out the videos on youtube....theres alot and they mix on video and talk about steeping. my friend made her first batch last week she used flavor apprentice mint and some of the capella chocolate that i bought . yesterday we tried it and it tasted totally different than when she made it. so the steeping thing definitely helps. try adding some ethyl maltol to it. i only paid 5.95 for my flavorings from capelladrops.com and it was cheaper even to buy the combo packs<not the water flavors>...and they are bigger bottles than ive found other places. i also got a discount for buying more at a time. ive heard some flavorart flavors contain diacetyl<spell check> so i read around to see which ones to stay away from. you can read about alot of stuff here

Steeping can be very important. Kimerpuff suggested submerging the bottle in hot water with everything but the nic already added. I have experimented further with the microwave and heating in 10 second increments until warm, but not hot(like you would a bottle of baby formula). This really seems to speed up the process quite a bit.
