Just learned in my physiological psych class that you actually shouldn't put anything, including q tips, in your ears. It's very easy to puncture the ear drum in which case, would be incredibly painful and your hearing will never be the same.

But... I still use q tips.

Actually it's okay to stick your own elbow in your ear.

I did have this one house I used to visit on the reservation and it was so terrifying and unclean (puppies were nesting in the couches, old food everywhere, it was terrifying, and I did yearn for it then, but I was afraid I would offend some of the occupants. I did want to report it to the Health Department, but my supervisor wouldn't let me. :)

At least puppies must have been cute.

No Eskie, the reservation teems with wild dogs, they interbreed and are everywhere. The puppies were not cute, and the whole thing was sad. It's a good thing I'm not afraid of dogs or I wouldn't have been able to do home visits. Dogs routinely in South Tucson are squished and left for dead by the side of the road, parvo is pretty bad, here, too. I adopted so many dogs that my son just found by the side of the road, or wherever, or farmed them out to family members, like my brother. It's quite sad.

I have had this problem for decades. In my case it's called Chronic dysfunction of the eustachian tube and is caused by allergies. I actually have to wear hearing amplifiers (similar to hearing aids) to hear normal conversations. There are so many causes of it from infections to esophageal reflux that if the problem persisits you need to see a doctor so you don't wind up like me.

Wow, I'm really sorry to hear that. That's very unfortunate. I will remember your words.

You may want to ask your dr or pharmacist about a nasal spray called 'Nasalub'. Very powerful and works very quickly. I always hated taking a decongestant because those always turn my nose into a dripping faucet. Just 2 squirts(each side) every 12 hrs or so. For me, this is the best I have found. It is an over the counter item that can be found in just about any drug store. Be sure to get the one for the adult.

Hope you feel better.

I pinch my nostrils and very slowly increase the air pressure in my sinuses. Then hold the very slightly increased air pressure in there for as long as I can hold my breath. It works for me sometimes, but it's probably dangerous. So you probably shouldn't do it.
When I try that I have to change my shorts

My son used to lecture me about q-tips and show me horrific videos of earwax trapped in peoples ear canals and the resulting carnage when docs dug it out.... It was some pretty intense lecturing, immediately followed by a rather... abject call, in which the kid had used a q-tip improperly and got ear wax jammed in his ear canal, he needed to go to the doctor to have his earwax dug out.

One of my favorite phone calls.... ever. The joy of youth, LOL.

Anna

Try buying a spray bottle of hydrogen peroxide. Spray that into the ear. It foams up and runs out, breaking loose stubborn waxy buildup and drawing it out in the river of bubbles. It tickles like crazy though.

Just be happy you don't have tinnitus :) I've had permanent tinnitus for about 1 and a half years, its a constant ringing in the ears feeling. it sucks but I'm used to it now. When I first noticed it I was fearing for my life, i went to the Doctor and they got me to use waxsol to unblock the ear but that didn't fix it so then they got me to see a head and neck specialist, but they got back to me by mail and said I've been put on a waiting list and will need to wait 12-24 months before I can come in to see them

edit: Also there is a trick my Doctor told me. Hold/block you nose using your hand so you cant breathe through your nose then blow really hard out your nose still while holding your nose. It can force wax to come out of your ear and unlock it

I had to giggle at this "increase in nasal discharge may occur". Isn't this WHY you take a decongestant in the first place? It did wonders for my plugged up ears. Suddenly, not only could I breathe again, but it helped to get all the sinus stuff out and I could hear and feel my ears popping as it was breaking up to pass out of the nasal cavity.

:)

Your doctor is an idiot, doesn't know anything about ears, or was trying to con you into not using Q-Tips. Ears are divided into 3 sections (Outer, Middle, and Inner). Your ear drum is what divides the outer and middle ear. When you do what you described it forces pressure through the eustachian tubes into the MIDDLE ear. The means the pressure is on the wrong side of the ear drum to do anything to affect ear wax which is in the outer ear. The only way that could possibly work is if you had a hole in your eardrum for the pressure to push through into the outer ear. The only thing what you described does is increase the pressure in the inner ear which is why scuba divers do that to balance ear pressure when descending. It also works when landing in an airplane. Conversely holding your nose and trying to suck through it helps when ascending.

Also, (if anyone is late to the memo) ear candles don't work either. I heartily agree that it's NOT a good idea to try to fix any inner ear problem yourself. It is true that once you burst an eardrum, even if it heals, it's never the same, and usually home remedies can make this worse. A regular old PCP can flush out earwax, an ENT isn't needed, but this sounds like one case where an ENT would be needed (for the OP) unless your PCP can fix it (and you'll need a referral anyway which is sometimes why I visit my PCP first, sigh, I miss my plan where that wasn't necessary, but at least it's free) and I am glad you will be visiting an MD. Ears are really nothing to play with. I've considered whether I'd rather be blind or deaf and the answer is (heartily) neither.

I hated vicks vapo rub and I still think it's best use is right below the nose, when doing an autopsy.
I haven’t been part of an autopsy but I did participate in some cadaver dissection and we definitely used the Vic’s.

For the OP, I sometimes get the ringing in my ears from nicotine, and you did mention that you recently upped your nicotine content. If it’s a fluid in the tubes problem you can manually massage from the divot behind your ear in a downward motion towards your jaw and that can help get things moving again. I used to get such pain in my tubes while smoking but haven’t had any problems with it since I started vaping. Ultimately, if you are experiencing discomfort that isn’t going away a visit to your dr is in order.

I still use them too. My ear drums must be made of kevlar. I sometimes use a cordless drive mounted with half a q-tip and really go to town giving them a nice clean and polish. If you could see the inside of my ears, you'd see your own reflection. Thanks Meguiars Gold Class!

I feel your pain.
Have been dealing with tinnitus for better part of 7 years. I've grown accustomed to it, except when I read your reply and my attention was drawn back to it...thanks :)

I can put my foot in my mouth, actually Excel at it, but never my elbow in my ear. Will stick to qtips. Plus the feeling when you hit that spot...makes my foot go like a dog's when you rub it's belly.

Yes, I'm odd. Prefer eccentric, but will answer to odd.

That's unfortunate. I'm going through the same thing. Ringing has gotten better, but still there. ENT has told me that there is nothing wrong. My last thing to check is my jaw. ENT said he might have a TMJ problem.
