To All,
Thanks to all of you who saw my post and replied. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that by being one of design/development engineers in this project, I inadvertaently technically became a "supplier" and need to register as such to re-post my original post and reply to your questions publicly. I need to "apply" for supplier status and I need to figure out how to do that, so in the meantime I will PM each of you with a response to your post.

Thanks to all for the great feedback and to the moderators for being gentle as I learning the supplier restrictions on the ECF.

I'll post again once I'm converted over,
-Doug

Add
1) An inductive charging stand, or let it be used on the charging 'pad'.

2) A option for a custom atty purpose built to fully advantage your design, that is supplied by juice from either a juice Cartridge (so we can swap refillable cartridges, as simply as cartos) or even 'pellets'.

(1) Gives us something relatable and useful

(2) Gives us all something we all need, as well as the consumables you need.

Make it happen and I know of 10 people right now that will slap down a few hundred bucks for the truely 'Ultimate' or 'Executive', kit. Including myself of course. :D :D

Start up supplies. Pellet making kit, Cartridge refilling kit, Juices, powders, charging stands and pads. Lots of easy consumables.

Just spit ballin' as is my nature and profession.

Is there a way to fine tune it or do you have to hook it up each time the resistance changes for one carto to the next?
Looks like it will hold 4 presets in internal memory:
*toggle profile mode (PV can store 4 power profiles)
*profile change on the fly (change loaded profiles without USB connect)

I recently posted some ideas in another thread and was pointed to this. http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/modders-forum/97095-proposal-passthrough-doesnt-suck.html

I agree PWM is a great idea and there are probably some very slick things that can be done by modulating the power to the coil. So easy since all we're doing is heating up a resistor!

I mentioned a few other ideas that I will elaborate on in case you want to consider them:

If instead of two cells, you use a single-cell lithium source (a big one with high current rating) this opens the possibility of using a particular off-the-shelf USB charger / system-power-management IC that would make the charging side of things very simple. (see bq2407x)

Then on the load side, you would use a boost-mode SMPS to drive a regulated, higher DC rail. Having this voltage regulated means you don't have to worry about the fluctuating battery voltage, and the microcontroller can just drive his PWM output knowing the exact power that will be delivered.

Combine with on-the-fly current readings (and perhaps a separate high-Z probe of the atty) and you can get continuous resistance/power calculations to monitor the health of the atty.

I'm so glad you are already prototyping this and look forward to giving it a try. In the mean time I am placing my digikey orders. :)

Sounds like A great idea, but in my experience, any mechanical device with that many variables will take some time to R & D. Though you are experiencing great results with the bread board I'm sure you know that the first run of units will react somewhat different. All in All I am eager to see the end result but the best advice I can give you from an engineering point of view.. is to take your time, never rush it and continue to do as much testing as possible in order to have concrete Data to use as constants...

Best of Luck

On the other hand, this isn't rocket surgery and being fully configurable let you continue to fine tune it after it ships. On the third hand, this tends to encourage a half-baked 1.0 shipment but on the fourth hand, as long as everyone understands what they're in for it's nice to get it into early adopters' hands ASAP. Good engineering takes time, but you can't call it a good product unless it ships!

You know your first little laser mod....back in the olden days....the one that allowed me to quit analogs......Well....you have come a long way baby! Congrats on the new technology and my 2 year anniversary smoke free because of you and your mind. Kudos from a life long Cisco fan...

perhaps that will sweeten the deal for me to beta test?...just sayin....it was all true...it was....and my laser you operated on as a trophy...hangs on my key ring as a reminder....

Hugs and Congrats:toast:
