Shorting without the wick?

No I get a good reading w/out the wick. I'll pull them back out and decreasde the amount of solder and resolder them in a couple days, lol. I'm booked till fri, lol By the way the wick was TIGHT in the hole. Thanx for the heads up vapspaz, lol

Speaking of shorts...

First I'd like to say a BIG thanks to Dan and BJ for all the great advise and help in this thread. I finally took the SS wick plunge after reading this thread and just got my wick in today and feverishly made my first SS wick for my nasty tasting Smoktech rebuildable I got a week ago. So I'm a newb with this stuff.

I thought my first attempt was perfect and I had great flavor but not much vapor. I can live with that, but now after about an hour of use my Provari is tossing out an E2 (short) error. It'll fire for 1 second but thats it before the E2 pops up. I haven't bumped it to knock the wick out of place so I don't know what is causing this now. I can tell you that the wick was a little tight going in the hole so maybe that's shorting out? If it helps any, I used my Nichrome 32 ga that I already had from previous mod work.

Do you have a mod that isn't a Provari, if so use that until the wick breaks in. Provari can be a PITA with setting up a SS wick. New wicks can short from expansion in the hole and from expansion between the coil and the wick. With a regular mod or battery you can drip juice on the coil and wick and keep firing it until the shorted area oxidizes.

Lol broke mine on first attempt with ss mesh kept popping coil then i snapped the wire on the post .i guess it was too tight in the hole i had to force it and it made it longer from pulling the center out .Is there a vid of someone doing the whole thing any help is appreciated .

I wish I had a web came, lol. I'd sacrafice one just to show what we're up against, lol
On SECOND thought as bad as my soldering is I should leave that to the pro's like bj and scubadan, lol

Ok, I've gone through a full tank now and have a few questions.
Taste randomly gets very nasty, Its a burning rubber kind of nasty taste. What the hell is it?
Could a short somehow cause this?

I suspect I still have a short because when I first made this wick n coil I was getting 2.3ohms but now its down to 1.6 on my Provari. And it's still giving me an E2 error when I crank it up any higher than 3.5v.

It is hard to tell you what is wrong, a pic of your coil setup would help. Until you are comfortable building SS wicks I would stay off the Provari. Use Dan's paper method to oxidize it seems to be foolproof and gives an even oxidation. A hot spot can burn the juice and taste nasty. Check to see that the top isn't touching the wick and shorting or the wick is going all the way to the bottom and shorting.

Quick update... I had to rebuild my coil. The ohms held steady for a while, but then started jumping all over the place (anywhere from 3.0 to 1.6). Obviously something was not right, although I really thought I had a good thing going.

I'm certainly still in my learning curve here. I made a new, slightly smaller wick (25mm x 40mm instead of 45mm) so it wasn't as tight going into the 3/32 hole. Oxidized with water, oxidized with VG (even just using a lighter to get it to flame up and burn off instead of using the torch). Each coil would pop and glow unevenly.... one even self-destructed at the top where it connects to the + side (the wire broke in a beautiful little spark).

Finally, I caved and used the cigarette wrapping paper method as BJ mentioned. This seemed to be successful. The coil is holding steady at 2.4ish ohms (still breaking in, I JUST wrapped it) and has a nice, even glow when dry burned. I'm running it at 4.0v right now. Taste is just a little bit off, but seems to be improving.

On the cigarette paper method...does one do just the top/coil part or the top/coil + the part that passed through the wick hole...or the whole thing? ...or perhaps some variant that includes other preparation?

Might I draw the conclusion that typical preparation of the wick, flame/quenching, etc. does not contribute the protection the wick hole/wick junction..? ...or is that even a necessity or somehow useful? ...perhaps not. ...different path to ground, 'maybe.'

(I'll get back to my chart)

(expecting ST atty and mesh here on or before Monday...'could be' tomorrow...uncertain)

Cool_breeze, I performed a full heat/quench process on the wick. When ready to wrap, I cut a very small square of paper (maybe 1/4" x 1/4"), dabbed some VG on the wick as a "glue", and wrapped the paper around the wick where the coil goes. I then wrapped the coil around the paper and dry-burned until the paper was gone. My understanding is that this adds additional carbon directly under the coil and helps prevent shorts there.... it has certainly worked well so far, and I'm vaping that coil now with no issues (no hot spots, steady ohms, etc).

I, too, had thought about the wick passing through the hole and causing a short. This hasn't been an issue for me that I know of.
