Cripes, I'm a complete ...... I'm checking the mailbox every day, wondering where my 400 mesh is...So I log into ebay, and there's an unpaid item alert waiting for me......

:-x

Wow, m0r0n is censored?! I can't even call myself a m0r0n?

Ok,so I tried a cotton wick by itself in this tank and ,well lets just say I might need a tad bit of practice making a wick from rolled cotton from cvs.All and all,it was ok but,I think I wraped it either too tight or make the wick too fat. It seemed to be drowning, even though it did produce average vapor.Anywho,I torched my ss wick and wrapped a cap of cotton over the top of it and then wrapped a 2.8omh coil(wasnt tring to get 2.8 lol)around the cotton covered SS and I have to say.I like the taste. It seems to have gotten rid of the ever so slight metal taste that I was getting from the SS wick. The metal taste wasnt overbearing by any means but it was there in the background. So,the cotton cap over the SS just kinda made a perfect set up for me.Ill let ya know how it holds up in my vivi tank.

Waiting on ss mesh and kanthal wire, what did you use for the cotton cap? Gauze? Also, how much did you use?

You could try sanding the zinc off of the heads of those with an emery board or some wet & dry & then sit them in a class of coke for 5-10minutes , which will remove most of the remaining zinc. The zinc on the threads shouldn't be an issue, since they will be encased in the screw hole metal. The main one to worry about is the positive post, since it is sitting up in free air & will get hotter than the neg post, which has a nice alum heat sink all round it.

I've taken the zinc off galvanized pipe with a rag and vinegar before. That might work too. The only concern is that they don't generally put zinc on something that's not prone to rusting.

An update on my trials and tribulations... and perhaps the solution that may help others.

I had a well working coil/wick (SS wick) using bottom airflow per BJ43. Vaped it solely for over a week, was absolutely loving it. The coil was getting gunked and vapor was dropping off, so I thought, "Well, we've had success... re-coil it and get some practice!"

Well, first issue, I accidentally dropped my wick and it bounced into a little bit of used motor oil. So, had to make a new wick.

I've been fighting with this thing ever since; I must have gotten really lucky on my original wick & coil.

No shorts that I can tell... fresh coil burns nice and even. Fill it up with juice and prime wick... hardly any vapor, and frequent dry or metallic hits. Take off the mouthpiece and burn, and it seems to be generating a fair amount of vapor and the coil looks really good (no hot spots that I can see). I can can even see juice bubbling up the wick.

I tried a tighter coil... I tried looser... one layer of cig paper... two layers of cig paper.... new wicks in different configurations (smaller center hole, larger center hole, less mesh, more mesh). Every time, even coil but a good hit here and there but otherwise nasty, and barely any vapor when drawing (but what was there had a harsh TH).

At wits end, I gave the small hole drilled in the side next to the wick a try... what the heck, can't hurt. I used a #60 drill bit (smallest I had). Screwed the tank all the way down on my Provari, which completely closes the bottom air.

Wow... right away, *MUCH* more vapor, a little less TH (although still pronounced compared to the carto tank I had to resort to), and the flavor is just brilliant... clean and bright. This is the same coil/wick that was generating nasty hits just before this, and the difference is drastic.

I've only been vaping the new setup for 5 minutes, and so far so good, but I'll vape it tomorrow through the day and report back my findings.

TomCatt Is this better then just the SS Wick? I tend to like the juice a little sweeter. The SS Tends to dull out the sweet part of the taste.

No idea :D, I haven't done it yet. Quigsworth has made a few videos around making various cotton wicks. This will probably be my next thing to try.

Modified my tank that had a SS mesh wick in it. Did the bluegrasslover cotton candy qtip; inserted the wick in the tank; twirled some more cotton on the bottom half of the SS wick (don't ask why :?: cause there's no answer to that :D); wrapped a coil. Guess I may have put a little too much cotton on top, coil is ~3.3 ohm; that's ok just jack the Vs up a bit. The cotton on the tip of the SS does seem to mellow the TH out some (which makes it much better for me). Getting good flavor, a little muted at the moment as expected, but my DIY peppermint is coming through fine.

I'm not really one who is able to determine flavor subtleties, so take the above with a grain of salt :D.

I'm having nightmares with my 3 Vivi tank rebuilds using stainless steel #400 mesh. My wraps are going fine but I'm having serious wicking issues - to the point of putting them down and using other things. I can't seem to get the wrap right or the airflow right. I've drilled a 3/64 hole in the burn chamber and it helped a tiny bit. Still not getting much vapor on exhale. Plenty it seems when I burn without the top on. I'm getting lots of popping, sputtering and the chamber appears flooded. If I close off the second wick hold I get insufficient wicking (I'm assuming closing it isn't letting air get into displace the wicked fluid. With it open I'm getting plenty of fluid but it's spitting fluid, the draw tastes almost like I'm just inhaling straight fluid. The throat hit is intolerable...coughing up storm. Taste is strong, but I think that's cause I'm inhaling fluid rather than steam. Thoughts? Am I rolling the wicks too big, too loose, too tight? I've tried various coil configurations and nothing seems to make much of a difference. I can see all coils firing well without hot spots. Where do I go from here? Someone want to pass along a surefire recipe with instructions from wick dimensions and configuration start to finish. I see a lot of people having success...I'm just not one of them. Thanks in advance.

Dawg, I never drilled the additional hole on the tube, but I had similar issues with the top chamber flooding in my early experiments. I ended up using a piece of cotton wick to plug up the 2nd hole. It kept it from leaking too much, but allowed air to pass through. I also opened up the wick holes (I used the cotton in both holes initially before switching to SS for my last wick) to 3/32 as the standard opening was too tight for the cotton and the silica, let alone the SS mesh. I have had no problems with wicking or flooding so far, and I started with about an 1in. square of mesh, trimmed to fit after rolling tightly. I did use the paper method to help with isolation, and made sure to fold over my outer edge of mesh before rolling to help prevent any errant wires from causing trouble. I also wrap my coil like I would roll a cig, I use my thumbs to push the wire around the coil as opposed to pulling it around. It seems to give me a good wrap with it not being too loose or too tight.

Hope that helps, good luck!

Try a 45mm x 25mm 400, roll the 45mm around a small paperclip. After you have it tight around the paperclip, take the paper clip off and continue rolling tighter until it fits in the 3/32 hole firmly. The center wick hole will be very small but that is better. You just have to oxidize the part that is under the coil and the paper way is good after you have done the heat and soak 4 times. Don't worry about doing the whole wick and there is no wick shorting to the tank if the coil part is isolated. No current gets from the coil to the wick when done properly. After testing your ohms and no shorts, start breaking in your coil by low voltage and dripping juice on the coil wick do this for a few minutes to build up a little gunk on the coil which improves wicking and taste. Check that you have no hotspots. It takes about a half hour of vaping a new wick coil to start getting good. Start with a lower voltage and build up until you hit your sweet spot for that coil and wick. Trim the bottom of the 25mm length to fit your tank leaving it just off the bottom. I leave 2mm of wick above the coil.

Did you drill the 3/32 wick hole? Usually the hole next to the neg post is drilled out for SS wick.

Yup, drilled out the hole next to the neg post. Getting no hotspots (now that I've done this about a dozen times I must be good at it.) My problem seems to be overwicking. My last was 2" long by 1/2" wide, then trimmed to length. Still having the problem after running 3-4ml through. Lots of popping, sputtering and the taste, as I said, is like vaping the fluid directly with a massive throat hit and little vapor production. That's why I went to the 3/64 air hole on the upper chamber thinking it was starved for air. I can either have overwicking with the second hold open or insufficient with the second wick hole plugged. I'll try some cotton in the second hole, but I would assume once it gets wet that cotton would expand and block the airflow. Worth a shot. Thanks.
