Im not gonna lie, i would LOVE to write a paper on vaping (postgrad btw!) from a social point of view! I find it fascinating! The specialised language and culture is really interesting! Whilst learning a lot for my own vaping needs, i do often contemplate a paper but i won't...yet...and when/if i do, it will be with informed consent-no skulking about in the shadows! Ethics come first as this undergrad should know!x

I find it no different than any other group. I'm also into fountain pens: different hardware (can get really expensive), different liquids, different activity; every thing else is the same.

I turn into what seems to be a random colored bunny rabbit for about 5 minutes everytime I vape =p Maybe they can find a correlation of the juice type and the bunny's color

Dr. Ester? Is that you? Welcome to the forum. I've been trying to get in contact but your office phones been off?? I'm wondering when these damn things are going to leave, they are getting larger? I finished the packet of pills you gave me for my bald spot but I'd really like to get rid of these darn things now. CALL ME asap!!!! :(

I can forgive a little ethical slip from an undergrad, but the professor in charge should really know better... as should the journals that are publishing her works!

Yeah, its an undergrad but aren't there still committees for these things? 'Informed consent' is ethics class 101! These are individual's opinions and whilst on the Internet and in the public domain (sort of), they still, nevertheless, should still belong to a person. Would people really use blog posts without the writers' consent? 'Overhearing' another person's conversation and using it in research would be ethically dubious (consider the early years of Mass Observation) so why should hovering around forums be any different? It would be interesting if someone who's been around on the forum for a while could get a copy of the paper and rip it to shreds with a red pen; "wrong, wrong, just wrong...where did you get that info from?!". Maybe it could be sent back to the undergrad, professor etc and set them straight! This should NEVER have gotten past an early draft of a proposal without revising of the ethics statements, let alone get past an ethics committee!

Again, I would like to point out that in the event that I get to do a mini piece of research on vaping, I would ask permission from the mods, and participants to volunteer in the research FIRST!

I've looked up this girl and her research and as far as I can make out, she's still doing her research, having just won a university grant of $5,000. Reading the title, I really don't understand it! I mean, it's a medical thing and yet how can you definitively use a forum for that? It is ethically and methodologically flawed! It removes the possibility of other mitigating factors! For example, 'I started vaping 6 months ago and I'm thirsty all the time!' might mean a correlation between vaping and thirst, or this person might have diabetes or have their central heating turned up too high- or my preferred option is that they always have a bacon sandwich for lunch and this makes them thirsty! Another example might be 'I started vaping a year ago and I get breathless whenever I do exercise'- OK so vaping might (MIGHT!) affect your breathing capacity negatively, or...did this person actually do exercise before they started vaping or could they not because of their smoking/weight/lifestyle etc etc etc! (I made up these examples btw!)

This research is so unbelievably flawed that the devil will wear ice-skates and hold the winter olympics in hell before that really goes anywhere!

Rant over... I quite enjoyed that...

These are all very good points, Rachy.

...

So basically what I gather from this is that the posts in this forum are being read and whatever data that can be mined from people's posts about health issues are put into a computer-generated simulation to predict destructive effects of vaping on a cellular level. Personally, I don't see the intellectual merit of reading forum posts and trying to generate scientific data from them, but that's beside the point.

...

I think it would be rather Naive to think that Researchers, Health Organizations and or State/Federal Policy Makers were not Reading and Data Mining the ECF for Information.

Just part of Modern Life on a “Public” Forum.

Certainly - that's a good thing for us all to bear in mind. I just wanted to point out a specific example where it was clearly stated that reading forum posts was the primary means of gathering data.

I agree. From looking at what In My (Crystal) Hua is doing it sounds more like epidemiology (very, very loosely) than anything in the hard data category. It is quite fundamentally flawed because she doesn't have a set sample size. People come and go from forums, and may post that they feel thirsty from vaping and then never come back to update that since they've been drinking more water they feel better. Same for other initial issues, many of which are due to quitting cigarettes, and not actually from vaping at all.

Studies done here where I am are done with a set sample size of people who all give informed consent. Their individual physiology can be measured over time. I thought about volunteering for one but didn't have the time to do it.

In silico is just a form of computational biology. Useful for pulling out real data, but seems pretty silly to try using internet forums as the data mine.

I've recently noticed that the damn purple egg sack looking bumps on my back have grown twice their size and they are moist. Idk? I'll have to contact my dermatologist & see if its normal for someone whose quit smoking, or if it could actually be from vaping. He said they'd be gone by now. I don't know if I should recommend him here or not at this point. "Dr. Ester Tawestiel" out of Arizona.

Just Eczema he said. :glare: Now I'm getting worried.

Stress can break havoc too my friend regarding skin "ñañaras" (dont remember the name in english lol)
