Hey Q, I think I sent you my info a while back, please let me know if you still need it!

BTW, what's the half O-ring for? Something to cut up & put in hole in the AFC ring to add resistance/keep from freespinning??

Precisely!
How's that exactly supposed to work? Where does the half of o-ring go precisely? (sorry, can't see it....)

errrr...there is a hole through the AFC ring that has a small piece of o-ring through it to generate friction and keep the ring solid. You dont use the whole (half) ring, you cut a piece off!!!!

I have the exact same build. ID of 2.5 mm, wicked with RxW. 15J and 240C. Perfect. Been vaping this for about 2 days now. Think I prefer the NiFe48 above Kanthal, Ni, Ti and SS in the GEM.
I have never used RxW. How does that compare to cotton and perform in the GEM?

Have been using RxW for almost 2 years now. Tastewise as good as if not better than cotton (best cotton for me is Cotton Bacon V2). RxW did not work for me in the GEM until I enlarged the juice holes to 2 mm. Not that cotton fared much better.

RxW is a fantastic wicking material but I've not tried it in the GEM I only have the fat wick here.

I find the flavor better than anything else and longevity is off the chart. You can dry burn it back to white for months and months. Fitment with the coil need to be very precise though. Not too tight to choke it but tight enough to get the coil good and wet.

I actually get no dry hits or gurgling with any atty. And the GEM performs splendidly under whatever conditions.

I wouldn't go that far for me. The GEM is my least favorite for handling thicker juice and even with 70% VG I can't get above 10 watts. Not that that is a bad thing I normally vape around 10w but having to thin out my favorite juice makes me pick several other RTA's first. GSL is my fave for 90 vg

Same for me Big Hitter. This isn't as simple as 'it never happens to me so it's user error', there are many variables at play. I also vape primarily 70vg/30pg, and in a 2.5mm coil with enough cotton or more densely packed rayon to prevent leaking I get dry hits from time to time. I also vape at about 24 watts. My ST Mini with the same juice on a 3mm coil never suffers from dry hits, but I've just never been a big fan of the airflow on the STM, I much prefer the pull on the GEM.

I just have to keep experimenting with power, pg/vg mix, wick material, wick amount etc until I find something that works consistently (for me) on the GEM. The is still no perfect RTA for everything, guess I'll just keep chasing the vape dragon.:headbang:

Can someone possibly explain what exactly the afc I ring is for. I don't have one. It didn't come with the added I ring kit. And I don't get what it's for.

I still don't get it after the above. My afc doesn't spin freely at all. It has a hard stop on both sides. And it has a black pice through it if some kind of something that doesn't seem like o ring and the metal stop points.

So i still don't quite grasp it. Can someone just post a picture for us please?

I vape almost solely 90% with no issues. My gem cranks it out. The key is it cutting the wick super short and leaving it very thick. Wicks like a champ that way

Like no tails on the side just a stack of hay right in the middle. I never get a dry hit. And it doesn't gurgle or leak. Though it will flood that way if you push a fill too far.

I've been using your method since you posted it a ways back in the thread and it does work fantastic. I tried it with rayon and it leaked like a sieve, but with cotton it brilliant. Thanks bud :)

The "free spinning" isn't where it's spinning 360°. That metal nub on the AFC ring gives it the hard stop. There is a small hole drilled through the AFC from top to bottom and without the bit of oring (or in my case a wedge of rubber band) to create a little bit of friction the ring is prone to changing position very easily. I had mine spinning just from the motion of my wrist as I grabbed the mod to vape. The Gems should ship with the hole plugged with a bit of rubber (the 1/2 o-ring) but some people had theirs fall out.

It's easy not to even notice it, wash it before your first build, and then all of a sudden it's disappeared, down the drain who knows where else, never to be seen again :p

Well, it looks like I'm in the minority here, but after a couple of day with Mark Bugs' Gem I can't begin to call this a "flavor monster." In fact, I get less flavor from this Gem than my EHPRO Kayfun Lite clones!

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, feel free to chime in Gem lovers. The main flavor I'm getting from this is faintly metallic. Bear in mine I bought this used from a fellow forum member and it is in fantastic condition, so it's not like I got it straight from the factory and forgot to rinse off the machine oil. I have soaked the chamber, tank and base in lightly soapy hot water and rinsed it thoroughly with scalding hot water - twice. Yet the chimney still smells like metal (I know it's tempting, but skip the jokes please), unlike my other attys (authentic Kayfuns, Erlkonigins, etc) which have no smell at all.

That metallic smell comes through in the vape. I know my build is fine, 1.6 ohms with 28g kanthal, stuffed with Japanese cotton with the wick cut short. The Gem hits just fine, nice little clouds and no dry hits at all. But there is very little flavor with a faint metallic taste, and side by side with my Erl K the flavor isn't even close.

So I'm checking in to see if anybody else had this problem. Or is it back to the classies for this baby?

Nope, nothing close to your case here. Got mine from MB directly and it indeed is a flavourful atty. And a small one.
Maybe it's your juice.

Yeah, that was my first thought, but no, it's not my juice. I've tried three different kinds and compared one of them side by side on the Erl K just to make sure.

The chance, that 2 original GEMs are so different, is very slim.
Is it really original? There are clones, you know.
Maybe it's something the previous owner did with it?
Maybe it's your wick? I use rayon and basically, and don't like anything else. Try to change the wicking material.
Maybe only now you experiance real taste ;) Who knows. A year ago I thought the Nautilus was a flavour killer.

I just had to check your classified seller (sorry). Highly unlikely you bought a 'replica'.

If you have an Ultrasonic cleaner this is the time to use it: 30 minutes or less should remove all "metallic" taste. If you don't have one it is a good investment. I had one, and only one, flavor that no amount of soaking would remove. Ultrasonic: done!

As for the GEM as a flavor atty: definitely. It will also produce a decent amount of vapor. You do need to be patient learning to build it.

Since its release I have only built it for TC (Ni 200) without a hitch...until recently with NiFe 52.

With four other attys built with NiFe 52 the GEM sat in line waiting for a re-build. Did that this AM. Now running it at 450 F 32Watts on a VS 200 and have pushed it to 44 Watts. Flavor for days!

This is definitely not a replica, and believe me I checked on the seller before I bought it and I had no doubts about him. The machining is perfect on this Gem and everything fits together like a glove and it arrived in that snazzy Mark Bugs box that clone makers don't use. I've had a replica or two in the past, and no matter how good they are, they just can't compare to a high end authentic in the quality of machining and parts. I'm convinced that this is the real deal.

I'm pretty confident in my build, I've been building my own coils for about a year now. The one I have in the Gem produces great vapor and not a single dry hit, so I'm discounting the build as the problem. Besides, I can smell a strong metallic odor from the chimney section, and I'm sure that what's amiss. With the quality of the steel Mark used, it should be odorless.

I will fire up the ultrasonic cleaner next. On the atty you cleaned, did you use a commercial cleaning solution or make your own? If you made it, did you use ammonia?
