Well, the ultrasonic cleaning didn't work. I still have that metallic smell from the tank and chimney - which just can't be right.

What about you guys? Is your chimney section odorless? Is this just mine?

Well, smells just like my eliquid.. It's pure SS.

Couple of ideas and thoughts.

Could it be you're tasting what's in the juice? I say this because I have tasted things in different juices that I've heard were in them, but have never tasted until I got the GEM. Sometimes that's been good and with a few that's hasn't worked so well.

Do you have a pipe cleaner or something you can use to scrub the chimney with? I find chimneys and drip tips tend to hold baked on gunk even though it may be loose and wipe right out after an ultrasonic bath.

What 'W' are you firing it at? Some batches of Kanthals taste metallic at higher temps. And those'd be more pronounced in a flavor atty like the GEM. Try vaping it at lower temps / 'W' for a while and see.

Furthermore, you could also wipe clean the chimney innards with a Q-tip soaked in alcohol. And then boil the atty in milk for 10-15 minutes. That takes away most putrid / metallic odors from almost everything.

I used a thin piece of paper towel to clean out the chimney, but good suggestion.

No, I don't think it's the juice because I used three different flavors (tobacco, bakery, and a fruit) and even compared the tobacco juice by running the same juice in an Erlkonigin with pretty much an identical build.

Thanks for the thoughts though. I'm stumped. I emailed Mark Bugs to see if he has suggestions.

@scotdc, here is another suggestion:

Remove the O ring from inside the chimney, get some Barkeepers friend and some Q tips. Take some of the Barkeepers friend and scrub the inside of the chimney and chamber until you no longer see black metal residue on the Q tips. Wash the chimney using some Q tips with detergent and rinse clean. There will still be a metallic scent, but like Q said, proceed to boil in milk (I boil mine for 20 to 30 min) and proceed with the ultrasonic cleaner.

It has worked for me.

Boil in milk? Haven't heard that one. I'll search for that and DO IT. Thanks.

Hey Q. Thanks for the milk suggestion, will do.

I usually vape at 9-12 watts, normally 10 watts.

I discovered the culprit in my bad-smelling Gem. It was the o-rings!

I removed them from the top cap and noticed that's horrible metallic smell. Replacing them all, but naturally the spare bag I have doesn't have the one for inside the chimney. I'm soaking that in milk now to see if that helps.

Is the o-ring that fits inside the chamber the 13mm X 1mm? I'll order some, just want to verify the size.

From my limited experience, I would say the Gem has more airflow that Kayfun Lites (which I have many) and almost as much as a Kanger Subtank. You can dial it in anywhere from super tight like a Protank to wide open. It's pretty versatile.
errr..i have to interject on the ST thing. No way, in any universe has the GEM 'almost as much' AF as th ST fully open. It just doesnt...

Sorry, Steve's probably right. Whenever I used the subtank I had to have it nearly closed for my tastes. I can say it does have more air flow than the Kayfun though!

If i'm not mistaken, it should be 2.5mm airflow when fully open. I have mine turned down just enough to where you can't see the air hole. Definitely more air than a KFL. I don't sub-ohm or have any sub tanks so can't comment on the air flow of those in relation to the Gem.

lol! No worries brother. To be honest, a small drinking straw with the end twisted up would have more AF than the KFL!! haha!...whoops, apologies to @qorax for any offence against the KFL...of which he has many...:)
