Hoping someone can help with an explanation about ....my shorts.

Let me explain...:) I LOVE my Genesis Line and can't wait for the V2 but while I can always get a new coil build to work eventually, I normally start by getting shorts on the coil. With alot of playing around the coil always settles in and then we're good to go...BUT...I don't understand why I'm getting shorts in the first place. If I knew what the cause of the shorts was then I would know how to build a better coil!

I mainly get shorts on the lower wrap of the coil - the last wrap to the terminal post glows. So please tell me...is this is short through the wick or is something else the cause? I really want to understand the cause of the short so I can avoid it in future.

I've done a Photoshop mock-up to illustrate my point a little better....you can see what effect the short has by the glowing coil :)

I've been getting short circuits as well before and I suspected that it was caused by strands of wires from the SS wick. I now fold the outer edge inwards before rolling the wick tightly.

If you get a short on little silver electrode , try moving the electrode closer to the mesh.

I do it the opposite way round, always the contrary b*stard

I recoil mine about every week, just as I notice a drop off in performance due to gunking as I find it takes less time than a dry burn and also for some reason a dry burnt coil never seems to me to get back to the performance of a new one.

Anyway, I rarely get this problem but if I do I'll pull the terminals outward which tightens the coil against the wick and usually solves the issue instantly. Not sure if it actually makes any difference but I also wrap the terminals in the opposite direction to the wick, taking the wire behind the terminal and wrap it back on itself in the opposite direction to the coil if that makes any sense at all to you? :)

Nothing major but I find it seems like there's less chance of hotspots at the terminals that way..

Hi Maz

Thanks for the info. I do what you do, wrapping the coil the opposite way at the posts.
I still don't understand why the shorts happen Maz, is it shorting at the wick or on the terminal?
If (like in my Photoshop thingie) the bottom wrap is glowing, does that mean it's shorting to the wick?
I'm not very good with electrics but I'm trying to understand what's happening so I can basically build
a better set up. Thanks again Maz.
