I wondered how a mesh wick was suppose to draw e-liquid up to the coil, and then I saw the following vid (from the Siam Cobra group-buy thread many months ago). If you watch closely, after the video guy drops a rolled up mesh wick into the glass, you can see the e-liquid working it's way up the wick (by about 33 seconds it's pretty clear), and make a dent in the liquid level in the glass.

According to the thread, the mesh wick was just dropped into the glass, i.e. there's no airflow or suction or anything like that helping the e-liquid along:

Yep. I built a wick and coil last night using 30g. Wife and I were watching TV. She got up to go to the bathroom and I decided I wanted 28g instead. Pulled the wick and coil off, burned the wick and set it aside. Cut a piece of 28 and tied it to the negative post. Threw the wick back in and wrapped the coil. This took about 10 seconds. Started pulsing it and in that 10 seconds there was already juice in the wick.

Since all the mesh guys are in one place I might as well ask... I understand that the higher the number, the finer the mesh, but how does this affect wicking? Is it relative to the viscosity of your ejuice or is it just a faster or slower thing?

Raidy invented the Genesis atomizer and when he invented it is was meant as a fiberless atomizer, meaning it didn't use silica, cotton, or any other fiber wick. It used ss mesh. Look up the All My Mods part 1 thread here on ECF. http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/modding-forum/132663-all-my-mods-part1.html

And to stay on topic... From what I understand ceramic is like a glass or a pottery type substance, and is kiln fired or heat treated. It is an inorganic, nonmetallic substance. Its is also not a fibrous wicking substance, so would you all consider it true to the genesis' original purpose?

Indeed! You have unraveled one of the secrets of The Masters of Mesh. Wicks made of plants or sand or other inferior materials are frowned upon. Only the worthiest materials shall be wrested from the bowels of the earth. Forged in fire. Beaten by heavy machinery. Braided into the finest sheets. Rolled by loving fingers. Pulsed to life.

Wrapping your Mesh in inferior materials is blasphemy! The mesh wick is eternal, and shall not have its maintenance or purity affected by materials cultivated on the soil or dug from the beaches. The mesh is born naked, and naked it shall remain.
Kudos to you. This entertaining post inspired me to give straight mesh another try, having used ekowool sleeved cable for quite a while now. I read more about how to do it right, watched some more videos, and I think the key was to take the positive post out of my RSST while wrapping the coil so I could make it perfectly tensioned and consistent. Wrapped 28 gauge on a fat solid rolled 500 mesh wick. Very little adjusting and poking required. Now enjoying my best SS mesh wick so far, by far. Is it significantly better than the eko sleeve cable? Only time will tell. Right now I am thinking it is about the same vape quality, but that is a good thing since I really really like the eko cable wick. Now I have options and a good use for my old sheet of mesh.

I know people say with mesh the higher and lower numbers of mesh wick certain things better but I've found 500 mesh works great for everything. 400 works well also. I've used 100% vg with both and been able to chain vape. Also used juices that are 70pg/30vg and had no problems. I do find the lower number mesh adds to throat hit a little bit.
