Hello GLV fanatics!
I am a woodworker, artist and vaper here in Michigan. I am now working with Jay to offer the option of decorative wooden veneers as a finish on your new GLV2. I did one for Jay and he liked it enough to cooperate with me in offering this service to all of you.
I finally have my website updated and working so you can go to: Deer Lake Woodworks LLC. Makers of fine furniture & electronic cigarette embellishments to get an idea of what I'm doing. Check out the page titled "GLV Veneer Designs". I currently only have examples of a couple designs up on the page but I'm working on some more now and will put up pics as I have them.
I will be offering stock designs that I come up with for a set price but I am open to doing custom designs and one of a kind pieces. The prices for custom work will have to be negotiated.
The way it will work is that when you order your GLV2 from Jay, indicate to him that you want the wood veneer finish. Then contact me and place your order. Jay will e-mail me your order # and I'll start preparing your veneer. When your mod is made it will be sent to me for application and finish. That'll take about three days if I have the design done when I get the GLV. The veneer is steam formed into a tubular shape and epoxied on to the GLV body, sanded to 360 grit, Tung oiled and coated with 5 coats of clear polyacrylic.
I am looking into a third party credit card processing service. I might go with Zen Cart. When that's all settled I'll post the news here and on my site.
That's all I can think of for now. If you want to take a quick look at the veneer I did for Jay go to this thread http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/greatlakesvapor/91290-glv-2-here-pre-order-now-open-94.html my pics of it with just the head cap on it start at post# 934. Jays pics of it fully assembled are in post# 971.
Thanks. I hope to hear from lots of you. :)

Thanks shame! Thanks Wiz!
I was just out in the shop working on some new designs and a custom piece that was ordered before I had my site up.
Hey shameful, I'm planning a trip to the coast near Portland next July. I have questions about possible juice venders in that area. Would you kindly PM me if you know of any? Thanks.

Thanks classwife. I put together a flame design today. gonna do a shaded flower for the ladies (or guys who like flowers). Simplyrock asked about skulls so I might do one with skulls soon. I'll post some pics when they're formed into tubes so folks can get a good idea of what they'll look like.
I did a couple with silhouettes of Crimmy's pups. I'll have to show those to him first.

Thanks shameful. I think it's important to stress the limitations of marquetry. The success of this technique relies on juxtaposing contrasting species of wood veneers to create the image. Woods that are too close in tone tend to blend together when placed next to each other. Another issue is the size of the piece that will fit on a GLV 2. The total dimensions of the flat veneer is 2 9/16" long (cap to cap) by 2 13/16" wide (around). The smallest saw blade I have cuts a kerf a little less than 1/64" wide.
What I'm trying to say here is that this is different than drawing or photography. The ability to achieve fine details and shading are very limited. I'm going to try a flower design with a little shading but that is done by putting the edges of light colored veneer into hot sand to lightly scorch them so this effect is not that easy to control.
Bottom line. For this to look right the design needs to be fairly simple fields of solid color. Think cut paper or mosaic. So cool looking designs can be done if they're simple enough.
To answer your question directly, shameful, I could simplify that image but it wouldn't be easy and it may not look as cool as you'd want it to.
Is that a still of the mountain demon from Fantasia? I'd really like to hear your other ideas. :)

Hey Mist...Celtic designs !!! Like a simple knot ? (or too much of a pain ?) (I make windows so I undertand pain factor !)

Yeah! I WANT to do a celtic knot (I'm of Welsh descent, think I was a Druid in a former life:) ) . Have you seen "The Wedding Bed" on my website? Furniture Pics There's a celtic tree knot on that. Don't think I could get that intricate in this format size but I'll def. do a simpler one.

Thank Crimmy. Jay gave me my GLV last night so I'm officially a GLV user now. Love it! I'm trying to decide which veneer to put on it. I was originally going to put my company logo on it but I really like the celtic knot. I may just have to order a spare body and do one of each.
By the way, I have multiples of each of these designs made up. I have 24 veneers ready in total.
