If thats a tent caterpillar it is a moth and you don't want to let the moth loose in the yard... Is there webbing in the trees @ the school?
(sorry I'm a bit of a butterfly/moth/bird watcher. Don't mean to sound like a know it all)

I am guessing he's something like that, based on the types of moths I've seen in years past. They don't do too much damage to my plants, but I will take him up to the meadow on the mountain a few blocks away. That is if we manage to keep him alive that long.

One more, once you found the leaf place some in a lidded container and wet them down like dewdrops and stick them in the fridge. This way you don't have to go picken all the time and the lil fellow can get a drink when you feed him.

The website I snatched the pic from says it's a pic of a tent caterpillar. Maybe yours is just a different variety. I like Adrena's idea of looking for webbing in the trees to narrow down what he might eat.
