I'm from the UK. As you may know we aren't allowed guns here. I do however find it interesting that America in particular is very much in favour of gun ownership. That's not to say that every American is in favour of The Second Amendment. I have no idea what percentage of Americans are in possession of a registered gun/s. I would be interested to hear however what your opinions are regarding the right to keep and bear arms, given the recent coverage of this matter in the media. Whether you are in favour of those rights, and what practical uses you have for the gun/s you have in your possession, or whether you oppose the right to keep and bears arms, i'd like to hear what you think of the status quo.

I would be very interested to see pictures of any guns you may have in your possession. I'd also be interested to hear if you have ever had to use your firearm in self defense, or maybe you game hunt etc. Whatever your reason for your gun possession/ownership i'd be interested to hear from you.

Not to go to deep into this subject, but

There is not a National gun registry.

Percentage of ownership is impossible to calculate. but it is way more then you think.

Media coverage only effect is I gripe, grumble, and complain when it comes time to buy a few boxes of rounds as every time there's some kind of coverage sales spike.

I grew up with guns. I was armed from age 10 when my uncle Frank gave me a Sears 20 ga. pump, and I commenced to bring home rabbits, pheasants, and squirrels for the table, and believe me we needed that food out where we were. Where I grew up everyone had them, and there were never any problems with them. My gun lived in the corner by the front door, and the shells were on top of the fridge. None of the little kids ever bothered my gun. They knew better. I was taught that if you can't take care of a gun you aren't going to have a gun. I cleaned mine religiously. In my adult years I've owned many guns, never having any problems with them, even after having to draw them on two occasions in self-defense, which fortunately was enough, and the would-be assailants quickly departed. I hope I never have to fire a weapon in self-defense, but if someone puts me in that position, well gosh, I'm real sorry...

I still have two handguns, a Springfield 1911 and a SIG SAUER P229 .40S&W. One lives on my desk, the other on my nightstand. I cannot feature an unarmed life knowing the world as I do.

Started shooting when I was 12 we lived out in the woods on 10 acres very wooded w several creeks, thus water moccasins, rattlers ect the rule was if you're going in the woods you have to take a dog and a rifle. My first rifle was a Winchester .22 w a scope my dad still has it . I like to go to the range and shoot a 12 gauge for fun... Just skeet shooting . Never had to carry a pistol or use a gun for self defense- but I wouldn't begrudge the right to others guns are fine as long as u are trained to use them and know when it is appropriate to do so

ditto,, and 'back then' we didn't even have to bother with asking to take the guns out.....nowadays with kids raised 'free range style & entitled' you cant have kids running around with guns.

(ps,, boys had huge knives on their belts and never once did a knife come out during an actual fight).

Our founding Fathers found it important enough to put it next to freedom of speech.
I love it that Americans dont even understand their own Constitution and continue to quote gun ownership as a right...

I liked guns when i was a teen, i shot targets, good enough that it lead me to serve in the military. But when we had one mass shooting with 35 dead and more than 20 wounded, the government bought back all the weapons. I didnt like it at the time, as i thought it painted everyone as a risk. But 20 years on, i absolutely admit i was wrong and im glad they did it.

No mass shootings in 20 years since the gun buyback. Hard to argue with facts , and the bonus has been being able to enjoy the safety.

America. you'll never get it. Especially as you keep trotting out the NRA anthem "Its our second amendment right"

Its not, youre just pigheaded, wrong and ultimately selfish, and society will continue to pay the price.

I havent fired a weapon in nearly 25 years, and im functional and the coffee still tastes the same.

You are entitled to your opinion, but it's not necessary to be insulting.
I have the greatest respect for the Australian people and what they choose to do is up to them.
Our Founding Fathers chose these rights very carefully and worded them very carefully.

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." - Ben Franklin

Ownership of a gun is not an essential liberty, its a misunderstood affectation. Its like the national psyche thinks its still the wild west.

That was some time ago....

Progress and evolution, these are more worthy goals than striving to own that next AR-15

OP was requesting experiences of those in the USA about a few aspects of gun ownership. Nowhere in the OP was a request for a debate on the matter. Please stay on topic. A post concerning your time spent in the Military would be interesting and ontopic.

Also I see that you are in Australia. While it may not be the case there. It is protected in the USA. Hard to argue with facts.

...

Amendment II

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Yeah... I'm not sure how anyone could get the Idea that being able to Keep and Bear Arms is a Right guaranteed under the United States Constitution?

And that it's Importance was placed only below Congress shall make No Law respecting an establishment of Religion, or Prohibiting the Free Exercise thereof; or abridging the Freedom of Speech, or of the Press; or the Right of the People Peaceably to Assemble, and to Petition the Government for a Redress of Grievances.
