I worked at a gas station for a while when I was younger, graveyard shift. Was one of the only stores in the area open 24/7 that you could actually walk into and get what you want rather than having to do business through a drawer.

As such we were the popular pitstop for the cops because we had a policy that they get coffee for free. I'd even go so far as to give them stuff off the roller grill. So obviously I became their favorite person ever, and they took care of me in the event of aggressive and belligerent customers. Even once hauled a guy off for threatening to kill me because at that hour of the night I didn't have enough in the till to make change for a fifty dollar bill when he's trying to buy a $.50 blunt. (i told him he could just have the damn blunt, still got mad.)

The point of this tangent is that it seems like alot of people regard the police as some sort of mythological creature to be held in fear an awe. They aren't. The vast majority of them are folks just like you and me and a little bit of courtesy and appreciation goes a long way. Those dramatic pseudo-gangsters (especially teenagers) who are all like "oh crap, the police!" no matter how mundane our current activity is irks the hell out of me.

I've never been hassled for my PV. I've never been hassled for anyything because I am polite and cooperative. Simply not acting furtive and embarrassed goes a long way, and offering to let them hold it and look at it also allays suspicion.

Again be courteous about your vaping, stealth your vapor but don't try to hide what you're doing either.

Couldn't have said this any better myself. I think its natural for many to fear the police, but they are actually here to help. I think how you act in any situation greatly affects how they respond. To end up in cuffs you would most likely be acting like a idiot or high risk. Also police deal with people all day every day, and quickly learn what behavior to look for and most can tell when someone is being honest. Be polite and remain calm and courteous goes a long ways. They usually have bigger fish to fry than to worry about someone vaping. Police also know a lot about drugs so they know what to look for. I think a lot of them have seen or know of vaping just doing there daily job.

Altho it is true that they usually are looking for real criminals and have a sort of clinical eye to assess someone and see if they are acting funny, just remember that police attitude might change from location to location, from state to state and country to country, also, a police officer that is usually nice might also come to have a bad day.

My point is, dont be fearful, be natural but also be aware.

Early on in my vaping, had a local Sheriff deputy walk up to me at the local boat ramp and ask:

LEO - Had to come over and see what the heck that thing is you're puffin'?
Me (drinking a 'no-no in da park' beer) - Fancy electronic cigarette. (Buzz Pro w/DCT)
LEO - How's it work?
Me - (20 minute explanation and an ECF card later)
LEO - Some of my guys need to check into this. Thanx fer da info. Have a nice day!

Since I was sitting with some other local 'ramp rats', I think it was more curiosity than anything else. He was an older... errr... umm... experienced LEO and didn't project any suspicion; in other words, very pleasant.

Don't get me started on some of da younger LEO buckeroos... I've found that with them, the following statement does wonders to curtail any questionable encounters I've had: "I request to speak with your shift supervisor."

As to driving and vaping, there are two situations where I purposely exhale like Mt. Vesuvius; smoker next to me and cop cars. No pull overs... yet.

BTW, I'm retired and have more time to be entertained than the LEOs do!

They're just doing their job if they see something "suspicious". Most of them are aware of e-cigs, maybe not the APVS, but I've been stopped for an expire inspection and the guy didn't even blink when he came back to the car and saw me vaping. Asked if what I had was an e-cig, gave him a 5 minute run-down on how it works, handed him an ECF card... he thanked me, told me to get the car inspected and let me go on my way without a ticket.

Due to my former locale (northern cali) and my occupation (DJ at a few night clubs), I've been pulled over randomly at night and breathylised about a half-dozen times on my way home from work- of course, I've never had a problem and I was always let go with a smile and "drive safe", but that's mostly due to being courteous and refraining from doing anything illegal.

Out in Northern Cali, people TEND to get away with smoking certain things, even if in a car or while driving. However, suffice it to say that it's always a good idea to wait until you get home or to your destination before partaking, because certain cops will be looking out for people doing so. Either way, the larger APV's I carry tend to be viewed with suspicion. Four out of 5 officers thought I was smoking h**h oil or the equivalent, and ONE knew what a PV was right off the bat (I doubt that many officers in most other locales would even know what h**h oil is in the first place! lol). A quick, calm explanation helped in 3 of the 4 cases, and in the fourth case, the officer actually "demo'ed" the mod (I swear i'm not making this up), and let me go after he figured out that there "wasn't any weed in there".

All in all, I've never had problems with PV's and cops, or cops in general, at least since I've been of driving age. Lol.

I dont want to argue here, and I will agree with you that most cops are good, honest people who do a good job, but I can also tell you that although I have no criminal record aside from a misdemeanor possession charge of the most minor of substances(cant go into detail due to the rules), and I've never fought with a cop, given them a hard time, etc. No Dui's, no other charges.

Nonetheless, In that one minor charge mentioned above, when I was arrested, it was 1993, and they told me to just be honest and admit it was mine, etc, they'd work with me and I'd be instantly released with little to no charges. So, being a trusting person, and being a little naive, I signed the paper, then they actually brought me to jail overnight, even though they said they'd let me go! Then the next morning I discovered I was being railroaded! Lets just say that over a truly insignificant thing, I was charged with 2 felonies! Fortunately the prosecutor, the judge, my lawyer, and everyone involved told me I had been railroaded by this cop! They thought it was as unfair as I did, and ridiculous, and they dropped all the felonies and stuck with a minor misdemeanor. That was 19 years ago, and I had/have never been in any trouble with the law before or since.

I have also needed to call the police when my truck was broken into in a Home Depot parking lot, and the cop that finally came(2.5 hours later!) was completely unhelpful and acted as if this was an inconvenience for him to have to show up and be helpful! Then a buddy of his showed up, and he just started talking with that other cop for 20 minutes over personal stuff, and let me stand there waiting.

I've seen other cops in that city who were rude to me and others just because we walked by and asked what was up when they had a road blocked off. They stated cursing at us like some high school bullies! I've watched episodes of Cops where the cops there treated civilians like dogs! I'm talking about people who didnt even break the law, or had only committed a miniscule "crime".

I did just see 2 cops helping a woman change her flat tire in the rain about 2 weeks ago, but 20 years ago, I had a flat, and had a cop stop and hassle me for nothing! He didnt stop to help me, he stopped to see if there was something he could find to charge me with even though I was not doing anything suspicious at all! I was on a date in fact, and this guy stops me from changing my tire and takes about 20 minutes fishing for some reason to charge me with something. He found nothing of course.

Again, most police are good people, but there are obviously bad ones. Look no further than Drew Peterson....Look at his police career.

Back to the OP. I dont vape out in public in the open because I did get a funny look from a few people 2 weeks ago while taking a lunch break at a convenience store. They saw me take a vape off my Ego, which you have to vape for about 5 seconds to get a good throat hit, so I think they were under the impression that my brushed stainless steel Ego was an illicit device! They were really giving me some tough looks!

I pulled up beside a cop recently and, as usual, I was vaping away on the ride home. I didn't even really notice at first. Then I looked over and realized I was being watched rather intently. I just kept going as I had been and finally the cop rolled down his window and asked if I had been able to fully quit cigs due to my PV. I was pleasatly shocked. He had been using one for almost a year and was proud he had quit smoking.

I realized that if you use your PV responsibly and don't infringe on others you will most likely never get a hassle.

Lol. Sounds like he was getting up the nerve to talk to you about it.

That was a strange moment for me. I thought for sure I was going to get a hassle but it turned out to be the best moment of that day for me.

When I first started vaping about 3 weeks ago I had the idea I'd be doing it a little at restaurants, in public, etc, because I had come here and seen how many people are doing it so I thought most people would know what it was, and it was just I who was unaware of vaping. But since then I have realized that when I show people my Ego, nobody has any idea what it is! I went into another building the other day and while standing in line I took a vape, and this girl looks at me and asks if I am smoking. Thats the second time thats happened. I showed her what it was and she acted like she was shocked.

So now I only vape at home or when I am out I will only do it in a private setting where there arent people watching me so there arent any 'scenes' being caused.

I was just in California Pizza Kitchen this evening. I put my PV on the table and after dinner I hit it a couple of times. I made sure to go stealth and hold the vapor in so it didn't look like I was smoking. I have no issue using my PV wherever I am, but I mindful to respect others around me while using it. I don't want vaping to get the same bad name as smoking.

I have grown used to vaping in public. I just make sure to respect others and share my experience when they ask but not come off like I am preaching. It has worked for me so far.

Well I am sorry you've had so many bad experiences, highlander. It's possible that you dwell within a bigger city than I ever have and thus are dealing with a more jaded population.

Though come to think of it I did have an iffy experience in wilmington last year. I was in a company vehicle and was parked and on standby, waiting on clients and reading a book when some random woman in an SUV rearended me.

Since it was a company vehicle I had to get a police report regardless of the fact that it was just a love tap. Cop couldn't understand it. I wound up having to tell him that even though the bus BODY was fine, a hit like that could compromise the wheelchair lift so we need a police report and the random SUV woman's insurance information so we could bill them to have the technician look it over.

SO yeah, there are some bad apples and indifferent mediocre apples. But I've known some awesome cops, too. Hell, one of them let me borrow his car for a week while mine was getting repaired, and this was just knowing him from giving him free coffee and hot dogs.
