Compliments of AttyPops- that's how he got his name:
"It was the wick threads popping due to heat. Sometimes they get dry spots or areas the just don't wick well and dry out. They pop. Can happen on atomizers and cartos. Top coils with their long wick strands may have it happen more often. Also happens with any water in the wick for whatever reason. Yeah, sizzle is normal. Loud "POP" (sometimes with juice flying out the trip tip) is not desirable."

Myself I've used the clearos but switched to the Mini Vivi Novas.

Chlton. Please explain what cartomizers you have available. How many? Anything other than ce4 type on hand? Have they been working
and consistant before this problem?

What liquid percentages VG/PG you are using?

Are you in a place where you can go to a vapor shop and pick some replacement clearomizers/cartomizers?

Are those clearomizers low resistance? I'm reaching here, but if they are 1.5 ohm 4 volts might be a little much for them, but that's a stretch of an explanation. It sounds like too much voltage like darkhood said, although a clearomizer can make a popping sound normally.

Might be an issue with your battery. It might be throwing shorts to the clearo's. You did mention it's not performing correctly.

In my experience there is the "rare" issue of pressure buildup in the tank- very rare but it happens- also happens with carto tanks. Remove drip tip and pull inner silicon cap up a tiny, tiny bit. REplace drip but don't tighten all the way down- sometimes the silicon cap goes down too far and squeezes the wicks thereby not allowing the juice to get to the coil and allowing a building up of negative pressure in the tank. Has happened to friends but VERY rare.

They are all new as in last two days :)
