Well, I had a fast learning curve back in the day when my daughter would come home from the library at college and trash my puter with some well designed viruses that some smarty pants computer science student would place on the library systems. She would pop in her floppy (remember those? lol) when she got home without scanning it ... and POW! There went my system!

Out of necessity, I self taught and caught the enjoyable hobby of building my own systems. I would lurk and learn in the bulletin boards and only buy the tried and trusted system parts. Never the latest and greatest but good quality proven parts. It's paid off in the long run as all my builds are older architecture but are overclocked and running cool and smooth to this day. In fact your soaking in it? ... Heheh I mean that's what I'm folding with. No i7's or heavy cuda based cards here ... only tweeeked Duo's and one AMD phenom quad.

As long as you harmonize your processor and memory clocks with your overclocks, and watch your temps (loft ...cough ;)) and bottlenecks it's kinda fun to build your own. :D

I know right? My i7 is toasty. I actually turned my heat down and the room is nice. As long as it stays under 80c then I'm happy. I'm going to redo my OC tonight though. It's stable where it is but the cpu voltage is too high for my liking (hence the heat).

Heheh right! When you think about the power supplies in use and required for the higher end systems and cards (1000 Watts and up ) and you start foooooooldiiiiiiing?! ...

It's like running your microwave on high power 24/7! ... Yikes!!!. Look out electric bill!!!

Ahhh, but it's worth it right?! What a great cause!

Today was nice enough here for me to haul my rig outside for a really good cleaning. I have a Cooler Master Striker full tower case that weighs 40lbs with nothing installed, so I'd say at least 50lbs that I had to honk down stairs to take outside  Got my shop vac on reverse and tornadoe'd that sucker! Pulled my vid card out, and I think the neighbor's cat blew out of it! My temps have dropped about 6 degrees across the board.

This is the cpu fan/heatsink I have, and it's a DRAG to clean! Newegg.com - ZALMAN CNPS9500 AT 2 Ball CPU Cooling Fan/Heatsink

A few months ago I was in need of a laptop so my ex sent me his old one. I blew it out too while I had everything else broken down...dog hair came out of the keyboard lol. We used to volunteer with our local Humane Society, take in end of life / unadoptable dogs so we got used to dog hair :)

i had a apple with a 50 mb external drive that must have been 10 x 10 inches and 4 inches thick with its own power supply.

i remember sitting with my friend reading computer shopper and looking at the new 1300mb hard drives and we would say " holy chit! what are you going to ever do with that much space lol?"

(i feel old suddenly)

I started on my trusty 8088 processor and DOS 3.1. Deluxe bat file menu system, and a whooping 30mb of storage space. Prolly cost more then an i7 system now?! Yikes! LoL.

My first computer was a bit more advanced, being a Packard Bell 386SX @ 16MHz with 512k memory, 40mb HD, and a 2400 baud modem. About a year after I got it, I started running a BBS (remember those?) and upgraded the memory to 2MB to max it out. I remember how much I hated Windoze at the time, and I ran Desqview to be able to multitask DOS based programs. It was cutting edge, I tell you! :D

I will say that even though it was slow as hell by today's standards, it was a little work horse that continued to chug along for more than 12 years. I had it for 3 years and gave it to my mother for her solitaire games after I got a new system and she ran that for 9 more years, every day.

I loved Computer Shopper magazine.....it's what influenced me or re-stoked my interest to get back into computers in the early 90's though it's always just been a hobby for me.
