Dear .......:

Thank you for contacting me to express your views about electronic cigarettes. I appreciate the time you took to write and welcome this opportunity to respond.

As you know, electronic cigarettes, or "e-cigarettes," typically contain liquid nicotine which is vaporized and inhaled by the user. I recognize that these devices have become popular in recent years and that some individuals have been able to use them successfully as smoking cessation aids.

While I am a strong supporter of smoking cessation aids, I believe it is important that consumers have accurate information about their safety and effectiveness. Nicotine is a highly addictive and dangerous drug, and some public health groups have expressed concern that e-cigarettes may be marketed to children and other vulnerable populations as a "safe" alternative to traditional cigarettes. In addition, there is a lack of research about the effectiveness of electronic cigarettes as smoking cessation aids and about the safety of these products, some of which have been found to contain traces of toxic chemicals. Courts have ruled that e-cigarette manufacturers must submit evidence of a product's safety and effectiveness in controlling cigarette cravings before advertising an e-cigarette for this purpose.

On April 24, 2014, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced proposed rules to regulate electronic cigarettes. These regulations would restrict sales of e-cigarettes and related products to adults at least 18 years of age, and would require a health warning to be displayed on all products. Additionally, e-cigarette manufacturers would be required to register with the FDA. Any new products would be subject to FDA testing and approval before being marketed for sale. The FDA must consider public comments on the draft rule before it is finalized.

Again, thank you for writing. If you have additional questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact my Washington, D.C. office at (202) 224-3841 or visit my website at http://feinstein.senate.gov. Best regards.

Sincerely yours,

Dianne Feinstein
United States Senator

I'm sure I am not the only one to receive this form letter that one of her interns probably handled. But I am attempting to write a thought provoking response (that will probably not be read either)

Can you guys help me drum up, some independent studies proving the safety of vaping and any other important notes that should be included, perhaps including people's quitting smoking success stories.

Ideally, the info/studies/stories in this thread can serve as ammunition for the rest of the concerned vaping community to utilize when addressing their respective representatives.

Any links, suggestions, ideas and comments are encouraged and welcomed.

Thanks!

I typically write two replies when it comes to things like this... one where I curse like a sailor... and the other where I improvise cursing with superfluous adjectives to illustrate my point to the fullest.... one of which I send... the other I just paraphrase over the dinner table. :D

Get Hubby in here to help me write my response too! My hopes is that we can draft up enough ammo that we can all fire out almost the same canned response back to her... enough people involved and she might have to take our point of view into consideration. (well... I can dream can't I?)

We might want to address the letter "Dear Staffer for Senator Freakinstein",
Please stop deciding what is and what isn't in the senators interests. She deserves to hear the truths and see the studies herself. You are making a mockery out of her and all Calif leaders with your determination to snooze with the opposition of eCigs. Please print out this letter, hand it to her, plus print out the Drexel report, the minors surveys reports, the tobacco stocks MSA info that proves we're on to your pathetic money chase game, and help her to save her career by reestablishing the integrity she had before she hired you. Thank you.
PS. If this doesn't apply to you, then prove it, and do as I asked. I'll be awaiting a change of tone in my next canned response."

I don't think we can use his thoughts either. Sorry. :(.
But don't give up, we'll get it done.
