I messed around with this idea for about 3 days, before I came to the conclusion that there were *no* solutions that gave a decent appearance of the result that didn't turn on either machining my own brass (so $1K+ for a light duty machine lathe or a lot of busted brass tubing and a hand tap and die) or using an imported fitting ($3-4 a unit from Nerf).
Theoretically, if I could find plastic tubes or rods with the right threads, I could make something fairly decent pretty cheaply. Or I can buy aluminum or brass tubing that's been threaded by a shop somewhere and make something almost as a expensive (and still more labor intensive). Otherwise, it's another thing for the list of "places I can save money once I'm turning enough volume" along with custom thermoplastic battery casings and PCB's with exactly the IC's and other components I want.
