Possibility of a hot spot?
Do you test your coil before closing up (after wicking)? Just prime the coil well, fire it and see if you have boiling across the whole of the coil...
Some people don't realize that you can mess your coil up as you pull the wick through it.
Pressed coils or spaced? If not spaced, try that and see if it's different for you.
