i started vaping and like most i started wanting more, started with a blister evod now i have an istick 50w and a subtank mini, and i love it, i have been rebuilding the rba and the coils, but the taste is hit or miss, and im sure im using the same amount kohgendo in every wick (about 5 millimeters worth), no matter what i dont get scorching on the cotton so its not burning, but it tastes close to a burnt taste, what do you guys do, fluff the cotton or no? peal a laver of the cotton off? do i have to orient it so the juice hits the end grain of the fibers? when its right the flavor is wow, when its wrong its almost unvapable, i have the peek insulators, and im really juicing them up before i put wattage to them, sometimes the first wick works good, somethimes im rewicking them 3 times before i get it right

Cotton can take a few puffs to get rid of the cotton taste. Although if you wait long enough for the juice to saturate the cotton that is usually avoided. The signs of burning and scorching, if light, can be washed away with the vaped juice. Also can't help with cotton pad build.. I use plain old cotton ball from Walmart.

I don't have a Subtank, so all I can do is explain how I wick my tank, maybe it will help.
What I do for my Kayfun, is unroll a ball, tear off about 1" of cotton, split that roughly in half, and roll between palm till a fluffy cylinder, now I will stretch the roll till the cotton is eaqually distrubuted along the length, yes the roll gets longer, maybe 2" now x about 3/16"-1/4" diameter. Now I roll it tighter down till it hold a 1/8" or less diameter, twist one end and screw into my 3/32 ID coil, snip off to about 1/2"-3/4" to each side of coil. Now the tricky part, at this point my wick is basically a cotton rope, so I run it down to the deck and then back up so the legs point to the sky, slip chimney over, the deck and screw down, snip the excess cotton abouve the edge of the chimney and push rest down below the threads. At this point most will wet the wick and test fire. Sometime I do sometimes I don't. Most times, if it check OK on the meter, I just put the tank back together DRY, refill and let sit 1 hour. For the juice to absorb into the cotton. Screw to mod and Vape away.

Burnt 'dry hits' are generally caused by three things:
Too much wick material allowing the coil to choke the flow of juice.
Too much airflow causing a lack of vacuum in the atomizer resulting in poor juice flow to the wick
Too much wattage applied

The other possibility is a poorly constructed coil with 'hot spots'.'hot leg(s)

That RBA in the Subtank kit is very finicky!! There are several other threads in regards to it! The reason, from what I have found out with mine, for those dry hits is the little holes on the bottom that bring in the juice are very, VERY small and therefore don't allow much liquid to get in. Common resolution is to dremmel or drill those holes larger. I have yet to do it, but most others say this is the remedy. Also, prime that new wick with LOTS of juice!! Don't chain vape with it. Hit, then give it a few to wick more juice. I have found that lower wattage, using my Sigelei 50W Box mod on 22W or less, is best. Also, the Wick. Some say load it up so the more cotton the more it will wick. However, I have found the exact opposite to be true with the RBA. I use less cotton, just enough to have some tails in the bottom, wrapped away from those inlet holes to allow the most juice to get into the chamber with the least amount of resistance. That way I figure my cotton will do the rest! It seems to have worked.

Once I drill out those holes a bit bigger I'll let you know how it works out. Or if you do in the mean time, by all means, please let us know your results!!
