I've seen, from time to time, comments like "vaping at 10W+ really brings out the flavor" and so on...

I'm on day 3 of my first APV (Vamo V3, mostly eVods 2.5ohm). I've fussed a but with different wattages, but I found that 8 to 8.5 is the real sweet spot. I pushed it up past 9W once, and while it did bring out the flavor, the flavor it brought out was akin to sucking on a burnt match. :)

What am I missing here? Does the PG/VG ratio come into play? Being a new vaper (and even newer VV/VW vaper), I've tried to stick to the ohms+2 rule and I've seen several charts that basically say that once you get above 8.5, here be dragons.

Hi

1) There are no rules
2) It's all about what tastes good to you
3) There are no rules
4) Charts and math formulae just give you a place to start, you then dial up or down to what you like
5) There are no rules!

I have never vaped over ≈ 8.5w and doubt I'm missing anything, since when I turned it up it didn't taste good. Other people wouldn't like the cool vape I do. They wouldn't like my juice either.:)

Ohm's, wattage voltage and all that jazz is only one part of the whole physics that goes into vaping. Wick size and coil coverage of the wick will play a major role as well.

A 20 watt electron pumping coil will taste like crap on a tiny wick (ex: the ones youll find in regular atomizers) because the wick can't hold enough juice and it will boil and evaporate extremely rapidly leaving you with the worst vape you could possibly imagine.

But if you have a super thick wick that can hold a vast amount of juice (like most RBA's), your 20 watts will give you HUGE plumes of quality vapor. And that vaper will not necessarly be hot, it all depend on the motion of the vapor inside your atty (the further it has to travel, the cooler the vape)

I vape a 70/30 mix on a top coil and I find above 8 watts it cooks my juice also really drains my tank

And it can change. My ADV in a carto tank I like at about 8w, maybe more later in the evening, but the same juice in a Protank I keep at under 6w. I've vaped this juice for a year, in all different kinds of toppers and every one is different.

Best wattage for flavor depends on the atty. Generally, clearos/cartos are designed for below 10w. On the other hand 10w is where most genesis style RBAs are just getting started.

Partially because they absorb more heat due to being buliker around the coil but also because they have a much bigger surface area for producing vapor. (bigger coil, SS mesh conducts heat way better)
More surface area means the vapor is cooler. It feels just as warm though since the vapor to air ratio is higher than on a smaller atty.
Cool vaporization makes for finer particles that fly off and burns less of the juice. Some flavor agents and nicotine are especially susceptible to high heat.
Lots of cool and thick vapor makes for the best flavor expierence.

also what ohms+2 rule? Ohms by themselves mean nothing, you can have the same ohm rating for a 10 inch thick wire and a 1 inch thin wire even though their heat production properties are vastly different. Whats more important is the physical size of the coil which determines how much wattage you need to apply to it to reach the desired temperature. The bigger the coils surface area the more watts you can apply before it will burn the juice.

also what ohms+2 rule?

Not sure how it applies to all devices, but I've read that a good place to start with a VV device is add 2 to the resistance.... So for a 2.5 ohm eVod, for instance, 4.5V would be a good place set. That puts you in the 8W range for pretty much any resistance.

That's how I dialed in my spinner before I had a VW device, now I just set it at 8/8.5W and leave it be for the most part.

I vape at 10 watts sometimes I kick it up to 12 watts. but I wrap all my coils my self on my protank type atomizers. I use very small coils and many turns. anywhere from 6-7 turns 2.5ohms and higher.

I assume I can't run 10 watts if I make bigger coils and have lets say 4-5 turns.

and also it has to do with you personal taste.

Yes. It's an on-the-fly formula just to give you a place to start with "regular" clearos, cartos, etc. Again, it's just a starting point, you dial up or down to taste. After you've been vaping for awhile and know your devices, your juice and what you like, you'll pretty much know where to set it without thinking about it.

I've seen charts that would laugh at those charts, like this one for instance...

I vape with a standard 510 atomizer and run it anywhere from 8.5 to 10.5 watts, depending on the juice.
But I never vape fruit flavors, only darker, heavier flavors or tobaccos.

I also use high percentage of PG most of the time (70% or 80%) and that might make a difference as well.
