When I was 8 my family moved from Long Beach, CA to a little suburb in the sticks outside of Seattle called Woodinville. As I had grown up in the southern heat and never experiencing snow I was very excited about the possibility of my first white Christmas. Little did I know that this would be the year that Washington had an all time record snowstorm, virtually burying our tiny city.

Needless to say, power was lost. On Christmas eve. It was so cold our family converged in the living room for a family cuddle puddle, complete with my stepfather's deluxe thermal sleeping bags he used for climbing Mt Rainier. Finally Christmas morning arrived, and we all shivered and shook our way to the tree. Stepdad, wanting to provide for his family, took it upon himself to try and light a fire in our fireplace, yet another novelty for us beach bums. Unfortunately, fireplaces don't come with instruction manuals, cause we had no idea you had to open the flu.

After FINALLY getting our wood to ignite we all stood around in awe and wonder... as dark clouds of smoke began spilling back into our living room. My sister screamed and ran for her room, while my mother merely screamed at my stepdad. He shouted at me to get all the windows open immediately and turn on all the fans. Within moments we were in a freezing, smokey room, and nobody could seem to find their holiday cheer.

We laugh about it now, but that had to be the worst Christmas morning ever.

Epilogue: The following year our stepdad once again flooded our house with smoke on Christmas, however this time it was due to the family of squirrels who had taken up lodging in our chimney over the fall.

Many years ago, my college roommate and I picked out and cut down our own Christmas tree for our rental house. I was so excited that year for two reasons- It was both my first tree that I was in charge of decorating (i.e. not my mom's tree) and also my first Christmas with a real tree. My older sister had severe allergies and so we could only have artificial trees at Christmas time.

For two weeks or so we wrapped and piled presents proudly under our tree trying to make it look as much like the pictures from the Sears Christmas Book as possible. Then a couple of days before Christmas we were both packing up and preparing to go visit our families for a few days. As I start pulling my wrapped gifts from the tree and packing them in boxes for the trip I realize some of them are wet! I immediately knew the the water reservoir had begun to leak water all over our gifts. We both went into full on damage control mode trying to save the presents. We ran for towels and started to wipe them down After wiping a couple off we realized it was far worse than we thought. Our towels were not only wet, they were yellow!!! We looked at each other and just knew. His dog had used our beloved Christmas tree as his own personal toilet. And from the sheer number of soaked presents, we determined it hadn't been a one time thing either.

I can laugh at it these days but at the time I was furious! I have two dogs myself now... And a fake tree.

My best Christmas memory is but a handful of years ago. I had not spent a christmas with my Dad and Stepmom in 23 years or so. One year, I drove my kids and I home for Christmas and arrived Christmas Eve without warning. The look on my mom's face is something I will remember for the rest of my life!! Since then, I have moved back to my parents area and I spend as many holidays with them, and this Christmas wont be any different. I appreciate every holiday I spend with them now :)

Best Christmas memory...I was in a relationship with a lady who had 5 kids, and I have 2 of my own. They were just little at the time, and I had gotten divorced from their mother 6 months prior. I was saddened at the thought of my little ones spending their first Christmas without Mommy and Daddy together, but my ladyfriend brought her kids over. We spent the whole of Christmas Eve and Day as a family...stepping over kids to get to the kitchen to prepare the feast, picking up torn wrapping...smiles all around from gifts that were exchanged. It made for a true holiday, rather than simply going through the motions...y'know?

When I was seven and my brother was four, Santa brought us both castles! He got a Voltron castle, and I got a Fairy castle. We loved them, each in our own way :D

The best part is, we usually fought CONSTANTLY, like cats and dogs...but whenever we played with those castles we got along perfectly. We'd lay out a blanket on the floor, one castle to each end, and our people would interact with each other :D

Santa rocked it that year hehe!

One of my favorite Christmas memories is one year about 15 years ago when myself, my sister, my cousin and her husband rented a van and drove to Wyoming to spend Christmas with Grandma (Mom, Dad & Aunt flew!). We had so much fun on that trip there and back, so many good times and laughs on the road! And a great time in Wyoming to boot with some good snow for the special day.

Thanks for the contest, this is a fun one! :)

I have a lot of "best" Christmas memories, so it's hard to choose. I'm going to go with the one that taught me that it truly is the thought that counts.

My brother and I were very young, and our parents were divorced. My dad was okay financially, but my mom was struggling. Child support was enough for the basics, but extras just weren't able to be bought. I'm a bit fuzzy on the hows of things, but we were somehow signed up for a charitable Christmas party thing. We went, we played games and had food, and at the end of it all, there was Santa. Every child got gifts... most of them practical: socks, toothbrushes, etc. We got a few trinkets and one "big" gift. By big, I mean ~$10. I can't even recall what mine was, but I do recall the feelings of happiness I had, and seeing all the other kids look happy as well. Those feelings have stuck with me through the years.

I hope that one day, charitable Christmases won't be needed, but if they are, I hope I can contribute.

My fondest Christmas was when I got the originally Artari console game. It cost my parents a small fortune because they bought a bunch of games. My brother and I spent several days in front of the TV set playing with it until my mother told us that her and Dad wanted to watch TV...LOL. Was the best Christmas gift I ever received. I still have it to this day and it works perfectly.

Other than my memories as a child, helping my sister & brother in-law one year put together toys for their 3 kids when they were toddlers!

For some reason we taped my bil playing with the toys, I remember asking if he ever looked at the vid and he said "shh". Now that his youngest is 18 I'll have to ask him this Christmas to get that out...I'm sure it will devistate him, with all that extra hair he had at the time............;)

My best Christmas memory was when my daughters were both still young--3 and 7. We didn't have much money and to to sign up for Toys for Tots. Imagine their surprise when "Santa" showed up at the house with their gifts! The happiness on their faces is something that I will never forget. Since then I make it a point to always donate to that wonderful charity. I only hope that I help make someone else child as happy as mine where that day!

My best xmas was actually just a few years ago. Not long after my and fiance started seeing each other, her and her kids moved to a new town and house. Well, with rent deposits, switching lights, water, cable..all those wonderful things, she just didn't have enough money for a big Xmas. Well...I wouldn't stand for that. So, a day or two before xmas, she come to pick me up to spend the holidays with her and the kids...and seeing the kids eyes pop at the two HUGE bags of stuff I somehow stuffed into her trunk..and their eyes the next morning...well it turned out to be one of the best Xmas memories ever.

One of my fondest Christmas memories was back when I was in the Navy. One year I told my family that I was not going to be able to make it home for Christmas. Little did they know that I already had my plane ticket and a rental car set to go. I arrived at the Dallas FtWorth airport Christmas Eve and got the rental car. Drove an hour north and parked outside my sisters house. I called them from outside the house to wish them a Merry Christmas and after they told me how much they wished I could be there to see my 8 month old nieces first Christmas (who I had only seen in pictures) I told them "Well you might as well let me in then so I won't miss it". One of the best moments that I will always remember and treasure.

When I was 7 I had seen a Jungle Hunter set in the Dept. Store! I wanted it bad, but I knew we didn't have the money for it. My Dad worked hard to provide for us but there wasn't alot of money in 1962. On Christmas morning me and my sister hit the tree and started tearing open our gifts! Oh! there was the Jungle Hunter set I wanted! I was so happy. My sister was madder than thunder! She had wanted an Annie Oakley set and so far all she was opening was Clothes and dolls and some of my Dad's homemade doll furniture for her. She loved it all but you could tell she was disappointed! After a little bit my mother said Hey sis, here is one you forgot! You guessed it! It was the Annie Oakley set she wanted! She was so happy! My dad always tried to make sure we got something special for Christmas. We lost him Jan 11 2009. But he is still with us on Christmas! Merry Christmas Dad!

Here, there, everywhere!
Every Christmas with my family is my best memory - so I have lots of best memories!

But I will have to put my Best EVER as:

As a young girl I wanted my ears pierced and my Dad always said, "No, if God wanted holes in your ears he would have put them there"...

WELL........Every year for Christmas my Mom of course did the Christmas shopping and as us kids would open our present that we announced was from "dad" he would watch curiously to see what he got us........yep, you guessed it......imagine the surprise on his face when BOTH of us girls got the earrings for piercing....from him

Good job Mom............LOL!

Don't get me wrong, not complaining that he was hard on us or anything - my Daddy is the best.

The best Christmas I can remember was when our son was about 5. It was at an age where he lit up with every gift. I recall him opening a large stuffed Felix the Cat, and he was the happiest kid in the world. He giggled and laughed. He was just such a happy little boy.

Guess he's not the only one who likes Felix.
