I've spent a long time catching up on the thread, save for a couple of comments I dropped here and there.
I had to put in a new wick the other day, as I tried to clean mine and it was so crusted over it ripped when I took the coil off.
I have Zen's early-run wicks that came with the Febber APVs. They were a bit tricky to get into the insulator. A lot of us unrolled them trimmed them down, and then rolled them back up.
This time, I decided to keep rolling the wick down until I could get it to fit. It did, after a few attempts.
So, now I'm back to a stock set up. The thicker wick as originally shipped, 400 mesh. I did put a 5 coil on it this time, but that's the only difference.
I've found I really like the thicker wick better. First it wicks better than the thinner wicks--I've got enough wicking here with Gorilla
juice on a 400 wick that now I'm careful not to tip it up too much.
And I'm not getting dry burns. Of course, since more material in the thicker wick=more wicking, that's not too surprising.
The one thing that did surprise me is that I'm also not having the last of my
juice darken in the tank any more. I'm thinking that the juice stays in the saturated--thicker--wick and doesn't flow back down into the tank after it's been half-burned on the coil. Or, possibly that the thicker coil isn't transfering heat down into the juice.
So, after trying all kinds of stuff, and learning about this APV for about 5 months, I'm back to out of the box stock. I'm probably going back to a 4 coil. It won't dry burn as much now that there's more juice in the wick.
I've learned a lot along the way, so it's well been worth it try different set ups. It's the best way to really learn about the device provided you have some understanding of how it works in a the first place.
In a way though, I feel bad for Zen~. The set up he created turns out to be the one that seems to work the best--not that that should really be a surprise.
