uumm not sure did you get the instruction link I sent pm while you where on cozzz's show ?

Yes, it that the kit? I thought we were talking about the ebay kit. Thanks for that link. I have posted it here as the pages fly by. this one, right?

eLiquid DIY Nicotine Test Kit

I am using HCl, not H2SO4, since the original titration curves published used HCl. Might be easier to get sulfuric, both should work fine. And I do not use an indicator. Don't need it.

True I have not tested Levy's juice. Levy runs his own titrations, this has been known for a long time. DVap tested his as well. My aim is to not necessarily promote vendors like an advertisement, but to point out those that have been testing all along. And perhaps those that start. That is the point of all of this: who produces nic at truthful values?

If we do not find out who we can trust, what is the point of all this I am going through right now??

Well said, I certainly didn't want to imply that was your aim, I believe it is not.
I would hope they(Nic Vendors) would all be consistent and at least within 5 percent of their labeled values. That's a good attainable target for anyone that is selling this product to me as end user or any vendor for that matter.

Thanks again.

Thanks Kurt!

I think RTS extracts their own from US tobacco.

During the discussion after your part of the show the other night, one of the moderators specifically called me out (pinellaspete)(for questions I was asking in chat) and told me in no uncertain terms that "ALL NICOTINE USED FOR VAPING COMES FROM CHINA! IT WOULD BE TO EXPENSIVE TO BUY USA MADE NICOTINE!"

He lied to me!!!
He really bummed me out because I definitely want to buy USA liquids only, and now thought that I couldn't!

YOU ARE RIGHT!!!
RTS states on their website that their nicotine is made in North Carolina from tobacco grown in the USA!

RTS here I come!

Thanks again Kurt!

Pete

There's nothing I can add to Kurt's opening post to this thread... he pretty much said it all.

I've been out of the loop for awhile concentrating on things non-vaping related, but after receiving a message from Kurt last week about the testing, I got curious and had a look. Just wow.

Back when I was actively testing nic levels (seems like forever ago), I was generally pleased with the quality of the samples I received. A problem did turn up with a vendor but the problem was minor and the vendor took decisive action. The current issues with BE nic levels boggles my mind.

I still haven't seen my royalty from the guy selling kits on eBay. :glare: Naw, just kidding, more power to him.

From what I learned from the Vaping Show the other night:

All nicotine used for vaping originates in China. To purchase USA made nicotine would be prohibitively expensive. Resellers like Box Elder purchase the pure nicotine, dilute it with PG or VG and then resell it at lower nicotine concentrations.

I have been reading e-juice websites more closely lately and found that many dance around this issue. They might say something like "Nicotine is sourced from USA vendors only." Is that the truth? Well...BE is a USA vendor, but the nicotine comes from China. I think that is skating on thin ice and while it may be the truth, it certainly isn't the whole truth!

Pete

But the source is not the problem (which checks out pure), the problem is the handling.

I knew you were busy with WTA stuff, but I am really glad you are here now to spot check any of my chemistry. I am so much more comfortable in a peer reviewed environment, and this storm is blowing hard!!

glad you finally made it, my friend!! and THANK GOD for your kit, so people can check their own easily!! :)

yes, and thats the ebay kits instructions, from my limited use 4 drops was great for my 100mg that was 75mg but barely could barely see the colors with my 100mg that tested 100.093 both where tested 4 times to be sure and all tests came up almost exact, I measured with the cylinder and syringes to make sure

"7. Add 2 drops of blue. (when testing 40+ mg nicotine, you can add 4+ drops of blue)"

Since this is the test that alot of people will use I sent it for you to check and know what people are dealing with

Thanks for everything your doing for the vaping community :vapor:

I thought USA pharma companies have been extracting USA tobb in USA for a very long time ?

I find it hard to believe that ALL Nic comes from china ?? Now I would believe (sorry to say) it would be cheaper from china and maybe better then Pharma companies but then i could be completely wrong also

Lets get this thread back on topic, that being the nic levels and testing. Whether the nic is sourced in China, Australia, or BFE it really doesn't matter as the purity is not in question. Dragging vendors through the mud over sourcing is not the intent of this thread so don't muddy the waters. I think there has been plenty of that going on lately and to be quite honest I'm not happy about it.

Syringes will be more accurate than a cyl. I do like the simplicity of the kit method. Chances are you will get reasonably accurate results, but the uncertainty is fairly large.

Another thing you can do is put the mL of nic in a tall glass, and add some dist water to it and swirl. Add drops of BB. then add the acid little by little from a syringe with swirling. If you measure the nic with the syringe it will be more accurate, then wash the syringe or use another for the acid. The same math should hold: mL nic + mL acid is the same as total volume at end point in the cylinder. But the end point might be easier to see.

Anyone on the BE mailig list check their email today?? I just recieved one that they will issue a refund on any of their product a customer is not happy with. Made an appology for any mistakes that could have been made and a promise to improve quality. Thankfully nobody was harmed and hopefully this whole thing is a valuable learning experience for all. Kurt thanks agian for all your hard work to bring the facts into the open. Happy Vapes

This is not true. R.T.S. extracts its nicotine from U.S. tobacco in the U.S. and this is where I will be getting Mine.

RTS Vapes says on the nicotine page of their website that their nicotine is made in the USA from USA grown tobacco.

Pete

Yes we do. This issue has been challenged for months in literally hundreds of posts on several forums. We have been turned into the FTC and FDA and have been audited by both but our claims of USA extraction remain unchanged on our website. So what would a logical and reasonable person conclude from that? Seriously? If these Federal Government agencies found I was misrepresenting the facts do you think they would continue to let us make deceptive claims? Of course not.

Most of the people demanding I provide them proof are competitors wanting to know how we do it so they can replicate it. Enough said on this old and very tired subject.

Yes, it's been reposted (with Sarge's blessing) earlier in the thread and discussed. :)
