I kept adding acid until the blue turn pale yellow and there was no sign of blue or green yes.

Edit: I had the instructions right in front of me as I did the test so I wouldn't screw up. :)

If one color of an indicator is blue and the other extreme is yellow, you add until it is green (equal amounts of acid and base form of the indicator). that makes this particular indicator somewhat tricky to use. All yellow is too far, and you have added too much acid. Maybe not a LOT too much, but you are past the end point.

The grad cylinder is superfluous, it is only to measure the volume. It is certainly not the glassware used for a normal titration. You WANT more volume (adding water) and to be able to physically swirl. That is why we use an erlenmeyer flask, and why it has the wide-bottom shape, to swirl. Designed for titrations. A tall glass will be ok to, as long as there is no splashing out.

Just trying to teach a little technique here. The person producing the kits has already contacted me about making improvements that people can do.

The instructions for this kit said nothing about the solution turning green. I'll try it again adding water this time and watching for green but if it did turn green I didn't notice it. It seemed to have gone from bright blue to light blue to pale yellow.

I apologize, I have not read this whole thread.

Is there a list of vendors that were using said nicotine? I would like to help get the word out about the recall

Gourmet vapor and Honeyville for sure. He said there were a lot of others in my interview with him on Cozzicon's show, if I recall correctly. Cozzicon might know more.

If I have this indicator, I am going to see how it looks on Monday. It is not as common one as others. I am going by general indicator rules.

If you go real slow it turns green before yellow

Kurt a step by step of your method would be great I can see how it would be better as is its close between green and yellow

OK after a few moments of thought, I wonder why the recall is limited to that time frame? If he has tracked down the problem to this time frame, why is he suspending sales now?

Maybe because that is the timeframe of the DOPs of the ones I tested. I do think there were questions before that, but these are the samples that were sent to me. I have not received samples from earlier or later as yet.

I was just quoting from the instructions :

"When adding the acid and mixing, the color will go from blue to bluish-green to green, to yellowish-green, to yellow with still a tint of green, and when you've reached the 'magic drop', it will turn all yellow."

So it is the middle color we are looking for - just to be quite clear ? Normally in titraton it is.

Is this the same person/kit that I put in my signature?

What I am thinking is this:

You need:

2 syringes
BB
nic liquid
H2SO4
Distilled water
A tall glass that you can swirl about 40 mL of liquid without splashing

Use syringe to deliver 1 mL on nic liquid to the glass. Add about 20 mL of water. Swirl until completely mixed. Add 2-4 drops of BB, swirl again.

Use other syringe to little by little add H2SO4 to the glass, all the while swirling with the other hand (ideally...certainly swirl until fully mixed after each addition).

When the color starts to JUST turn yellow, you are done. Volume in the formula should be 1 mL + volume of acid added from the syringe graduations.

Kurt's Kitchen Titration. :)

0.12N strength H2SO4 (the acid - dilute sulphuric acid)

BB is Bromothymol Blue (the pH indicator / color)

A tall shot glass might be suitable.
