Any cravings I had were pretty mild - the worst was after Thanksgiving dinner that year, which was just a couple weeks after I started vaping. But I made it through that and never really had a problem. I kept cigarettes handy for quite a while - I figured they were always going to be around to tempt me, so I may as well get used to it. And they were a security blanket - I never felt any panic about not having cigarettes, since they were right there if I wanted one. I just chose not to have any. There are still a couple of dusty old packs out in the garage.

I totally get that - the security blanket thing. The way I'm looking at this is that it's an experiment. If I want to keep smoking analogues, I'm no worse off than I am already. Best case scenario, I start vaping and stop smoking analogues completely. My expectation is that I'll do both for a while and then pick a favourite. Since I spend $100/week on cigarettes now (I buy loose tobacco and hand roll), spending that amount for a month long experiment with vaping is no big deal. I'm not going to beat myself up if it's not for me, but since I'm a tech guy and and a tinkerer, I do expect that if I can satisfy my nicotine addiction and also indulge in those activities it will be a success. Wish me luck!

Best of luck, Rob! Any previous quit attempts in my 40+ years of smoking were miserable - switching to vaping was as close to painless as I could imagine. And for the first time in decades, I felt like I was in control.

Rob, I'm the same as you and you have definitely found something to keep yourself amused. If you really want to tinker, look into the modders forum or get a rebuildable atomizer. Before you know it, you're going to have lots of toys. :)

I smoked & vaped for 3 days after getting my eGo kit. I finished an open pack, then never bought more. My quit date was August 28, 2011. That's right, 1 year ago today! It worked pretty easily for me. But, about 5 months into vaping exclusively, I had massive cravings. I vaped them away, but it was tough. I was lucky that we only have 1 car & my wife was away. I got through it & now I don't think I'll ever smoke again. Thanks to the encouragement & well wishes I got that night from everyone on ECF.

Congrats! A year is a long time, I can't go an hour without a cigarette :). All the stories like yours have me feeling really optimistic. Thanks for sharing!

I smoked a couple of cigarettes the day the kit came in the mail. I opened it, hooked it all together and started puffing away. That was it. I had about 3 smokes in my pack outside but never touched 'em again. The fresh pack in the car I gave to my husband a couple of days later when he ran out. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones to have been able to stub out an analog and start vaping exclusively.

Hearing about getting cravings months into vaping makes me nervous though.

Awesome. The thing with me is that I actually enjoy the act of smoking, and when I try to quit I have as much trouble giving up the act as I do dealing with the actual nicotine withdrawal. That's why I want to try vaping. I'm motivated to get away from cigarettes, I know they're affecting my health in a BIG way (I have a terrible smokers cough - especially when I first wake up), and I can't run more than a couple hundred metres before I'm out of breath. IMO, a 32 year old guy who is generally in OK shape shouldn't feel like that. I figure if I can switch over to vaping, and slowly lower the nicotine level in my e-juices, then I might have a fighting chance. Heck, I don't care if I end up vaping a 24mg e-juice for the rest of my life, I'd still be further ahead than I am now. That being said, I'm not going to expect it to be a 1:1 switch, or that it will happen over night. I'm going to work at it. But considering that I'm excited to try vaping, and motivated to quit cigarettes, I'm going to give it a a go...

I took my first vape off of my neighbor's e-cig. Never even thought about quitting the stinkys. When I lit up my next smoke, it tasted absolutely horrendous! I went back to my neighbor and begged him for a set up until I could order and receive my own. I have never looked back.

I was, however, used to having a stinky hanging out of my mouth while working and you just cant do that with a PV. Other than that change of behavior, it's all been good!

You can do it Rob. I still FEEL like I'm smoking, but in a different way. I really want to quit nicotine, and you do too, and the mind is a very powerful thing. Hell I'm doing a weight loss program simultaneously and being successful at that TOO, mainly because I don't feel like I've quit smoking. There's no way I could stay on a weight loss plan WHILE trying to stop smoking. No way.

Thanks for the words of encouragement! Like I said, I'm going to give it my all but without beating myself up if I still have a few regular cigarettes here and there. If I could even reduce my cigarette consumption by 10%, I'd look at that as a win since I'd be 10% healthier than I am now :). Not sure about you, but I've tried quitting so many times that I just can't be bothered beating myself up over it anymore. Sure, I feel bad when I try and fail, but that's life. I've resigned myself to being a smoker until I can find something to replace that sensation, and after everything I've read about vaping over the last few days I'm hoping that it will be my saving grace. I'm optimistic that some day, maybe a month from now or maybe a year, that I can put one of those banners on my posts that says "X months since my last cigarette, $X saved!".

Well, not as hard as I thought. I was pack a day smoker for 35 years. The price of cigarettes got to me 3 years ago. So I used ecigs to cut back on money spent smoking. After a few weeks, I wondered why I kept smoking because this vaping taste so much better. I quit. I do have to say that there were times that I had 2 ecigs going to vape at the same time to get over a rough spot. But I did it.

Good advice. I'm going to start with the 18mg stuff, but I might order some 24 and some 12 at the same time, that way I can mix them as I see fit.

An excellent idea. You may find that you'll want to use lower nic in the evening, or you may have trouble getting to sleep initially. Don't forget to drink more water, too!

I tend to chain vape in the evenings after a long day at work. I have no issues getting to sleep. But the water thing CANNOT be overlooked. I overlooked it for my first week and thought everyone was full of it. Then I went to bed one night and woke up at 3 AM feeling like a dried up leaf. I drank 24oz of water before going back to bed. I was extremely dehydrated. I cannot stress enough how important water intake is while vaping.

Good luck putting the stinkies down forever Rob. I was lucky enough to be one of those that started vaping and stopped smoking immediately, but I know everyone is different. Every stinky avoided is a good thing.

Thanks for the tips! The thing is, I have a really weird schedule. I'm a freelancer and work from home, and my main client is in Australia (13 hour time difference). What that means is that I wake up around 11AM, and go to bed around 3-4AM, so evening are subjective LOL... Also, I tend to drink A LOT of water anyway. I never thought I did until my friends started mentioning how I always seem to have a glass/bottle of water in my hands. Just out of curiosity, why do you say to drink more water?
