How often do you change your wick?

I'm using a kayfun 3.1 with a coil @ .9Ohm with 28G Kanthal @ 3.7V (3.5 Average).

Anyway, how often do you have to swap out your wick? I seem to have to do it once every two days, though sometimes I find myself having to do it sooner. I use 60VG/40PG eliquid and vape reasonably heavily.

Is that normal? How often do you swap out yours?

Although I use 27 gauge, I run a similar resistance.

Depends on your personal vaping model and the juice blend/additives... what you're doing is not unreasonable at all for the PG/VG blend. Cotton, which I assume is what you use... is cheap. ;-)

Changing wicks out, which, oddly enough, I just commented on in another thread, allows me an opportunity to check coil screws, dry burn residue off the coil... and on a coil that might be several months old, give it a look under a 10X loupe.

Cotton certainly is cheap. Think I got hundreds of organic 100% cotton balls for about £2.

I don't mind having to change the wick - it only takes about five minutes to do it and that includes giving the device a quick clean. I just wasn't sure if it was a sign of bad technique :p I am however planning on getting a lower guage Kanthal because for the ohms I want I'm using less wraps than I'd like and therefore less surface of the Kanthal in contact with the cotton.

Days has little or nothing to do with anything; the question is how much juice you've run through it and what's in that juice. I doubt the PG/VG ratio has much influence, but the flavorings sure do. With some of the juices I run, the juice starts looking mighty dark after 3-4 refills; with other juices I can get 7-10.

I agree Rossum. After getting a little experience under my belt and learning how to run my mods/attys at the right resistance, and adjust the v/watts correctly I've noticed with what I vape and how much, a near constant amount btw, I change mine pretty consistently every other day. Sometimes I'll nurse a coil along, knowing I would prefer to change it sooner, but just feeling lazy and wanting to get the most time out of it so I'll push it to the limits. Usually it's about every other day though. Hope that helps!

Hence the rational behind using 27 gauge. My 0.9Ω target with 27 gauge is 9 wraps, vs. 7 wraps for 28... about 20 mm² more surface area.

^^ This. The quantity and specific juice will determine how often it needs changing. My orange flavor I get 7-10 tanks before I need to change but it's clear. My strawberry flavor only about 5-7 tanks but it's yellow. On the other hand my Cinnamon roll only allows 2-3 tanks before changing but it's very dark to start with.

Dude:

If you dont want to change wicks so often, bring your ohms up a tad to say 1.5 to 1.7 and drop your voltage down from 3.7, that should make the wick last longer.

I only have to change mine every 4-5 days, could run em longer if I wanted to tho.....................

I don't mind so much - I love the vape I get below 1Ohm to deal with having to change the wick every day. I'd stay below 1Ohm if I had to change it TWICE a day :p

I run a 28 ga. vertical coil 3/32" ID. @ 1.7 ohms and a hemp fiber wick. I usually go threw about a tank every day. I can get about 3 days before having to change my wicking material. I know 3/32" is a little larger than most make their vertical coils. But, I have found that it opens the air flow up significantly. I also notice the increased air flow helps keep the coil free from gunk deposits longer. When gunk builds up it restricts air flow which in turn causes the chamber to overheat, scorching the juice. It will also causing more juice to be pulled into the chamber, eventually causing flooding and leaking from the air intake hole. I find these type coils to be so efficient that I can run then at lower power settings which extends the battery charge. I've been thinking about getting some pipe cleaners. Then when I first notice a restriction starting, at refill time just pop the top off and run it down the inside of the coil. I believe that may extend the life of my wicking material even longer.
