That sounds like a plan right there and I agree with the problem of reproducing the same thing again. I guess we can chalk that up to the beauty of the wood if you know what I mean.
The only issue, if it works good, is reproducing the flavor exactly each time.. I will have to just get a lot of chips next time and make a huge batch.. they are cheap enough so it's no big deal really..
I will also weigh the chips next time and use a precise amount of alcohol and time. I still feel like batches will differ no matter what I do, but maybe I'm wrong. I just imagine batches of wood chips vary from each other slightly.
You know, now that I've FINALLY found a tobacco e-juice that I really like, this Virginia that I just got from myfreedomsmokes, I can better identify and name what it is that I was looking for in a tobacco e-juice, because I seem to have found it. It's supposedly the flavor of Virginia tobacco, but that could include a lot of different varietals, I think; it is very light, not sweet, but very subtle, subtly spicy, and at the end of an inhale, in the brief drift of vapor still emerging, there is the very faintest hint of cinnamon... it's terrific, and very much like my cigarettes, but BETTER -- not harsh and bitter, just light and a bit dry and very faintly spicy. What sort of tobacco does that suggest, does anyone know?
Really curious...

I got the Red Oak today... at very first vape, I wasn't disgusted, which is a lot more than I can say for a lot of the tobaccos I've tried. I got it as 100% PG and no sweetener; it vapes very well, I don't really give a rip about "huge clouds;" it's quite dry, definitely oaky... oh, it's also the darkest e-juice I've seen yet, the born-on date was the 22nd, and it's a dark reddish-brown color, which I expect may darken more as it ages. I think it really needs a nice long rest in a dark drawer for all the subtlety to come out; there is something there that somewhat reminds me of my Virginia from myfreedomsmokes (my favorite!), but I'm not exactly sure what. Might be the Virginia has some oak flavoring added, though it's a drier taste; the Red Oak is just a *smidge* sweeter, the oak taste, but I think it will smooth out with time.
I have an 18mg "Oak Barrel Cider" that I sorta-kinda like, though I find it too sweet, and I really have to decrease the nicotine level drastically; I think the Red Oak will make a nice mix with it, to cut some of the cidery sweetness. I'll revisit it again in a couple weeks, see how it's tasting then.
I ordered an iTaste vv3 today, so I should be able to taste these very subtle e-juice flavors more clearly, than with my eRoll -- and getting an ARO pyrex for it, as soon as they're back in stock, so I can get creative with cinnamon and clove along with that oak barrel cider and the red oak... someone said I was making "frankenjuice" but I think those flavors will blend nicely.

That little barrel is adorable. I totally wouldn't have the patience for all day. Maybe someday. Very nice though. I bet it's amazing
Muggs - quick update, I took about 30ml or so from the soaking chips. Put a drop on my tongue - tastes quite good! Very woody with a vanilla caramel note.. I think it will go really well as a light additive!
I won't really be able to test it all out until this weekend.. my required flavors are still in the mail. Very exciting, though!
On Friday I will mix my ADV and I will set aside a small sample, maybe 15ml or so, and I will add the wood chip extract..
So Muggs, I got a question for ya.
I know you started out with a fresh, unused barrel. One of my co-workers ages his own scotch and gave me one of the barrels he used for free. I've flushed it with boiling water probably 4 times now.
The first time, the water smelled like scotch and had a yellowish color to it. After the 4th time, it just smelled like fresh cut oak.
I'm planning on flushing it a few more times with hot water.....do you think its safe to use? Or am I risking getting scotch seeping into my juice?
If you are getting that fresh cut oak smell you should be good to go. It also might not be a bad thing getting some scotch notes into your juice. Let us know how it works out.
So far its great! I tried it about 3 days into the process and its tasting pretty good, its a little light on the flavor but i'm hoping more of it comes out over the next few weeks.
Did you run into alot of leakage from the barrel? I'm using a barrel thats 2 liters so its not even close to being full. So now the wood is slowly drying out and my juice is leaking out of the cracks.
I know a little bit is to be expected, but last night alot of it came out so I'm scared I'm going to loose it all before the first 2 weeks are up!
I'm thinking rotating the barrel may be a bad idea, I should just let it sit in one spot (like just upright) and let that part of the wood swell so it won't leak there.
I don't know, I just really hope there is enough juice in there in the end to justify all of this!
If not, I'll probably just go ahead and buy a smaller barrel! I found a 1/2 liter barrel for sale online for like $25
I'd love to start trying this method, but honestly I'd very much like to sample some of the results before spending the cash on a barrel and stuff, where if the end results are not satisfactory to me, I'd get stuck with..... The wife just love's my projects and the "junk" I accumulate in the process....
If anyone who has successfully completed the process wants to sell me some samples to taste, I'd be most appreciative. Just PM me with details.
There had been water in for a good amount of time. He hadn't used it for a while but kept topping off the water to make sure it didn't shrink. Then when I got it I flushed it 3 or 4 times and kept it filled with water for another 3 or 4 days untill i put my juice in. I think I'm going to wipe it all down and just hope for the best!!!
Thanks for all the tips Muggs.
So I just tried a sample after 1 week of steeping. The flavor is really coming out but the juice seems to be really thin. I made it 50/50 so I figured it would be a bit thicker than it is. Did yours thin out in the barrel?
