Hijacked much??? I am a former soldier who suffers from PTSD myself. I was never a bully and do not want to become a cop. I was injured overseas (suicide bomber) so now I collect my disability check and vape the day away when I'm not at school. Cops here are a tad bit prejudice towards me. I live in a white neighborhood; I'm Mexican and my wife is Black. It also doesn't help that 66% of the Chicago PD is Irish while only 30% of the population is Irish. Something's going on there. But I digress, I just wanted to know what to say if a cop was being an .... I'm not saying all cops, just some. And most from my neighborhood. I'm not taking it to an extreme like TallGrass.

I don't think your taking it to the extreme as suggested. They need a legal reason to stop a person. Anybody who has a high school diploma can go to the police academy in Ohio, doesn't mean they know anything.

However, in Ohio if they want, you can be stopped for not having both hands on the wheel. Drinking coffee, smoking, etc. Obscure law but they can.

I dont care if the police respect me... that's irrelevant. What they need is a damned good reason to even speak to me in the first place. I'm a free individual and you are too. They have as much right to interrupt your pursuit of happiness as I do, and how much respect would you afford me if I just happen to pull you over to make my monthly quota?

As a retired LEO of 27 years service, I can sadly relate to some of the worries and experiences listed in this thread. When we live in an era though that everyone from Google Maps to the Fed's are able to watch us 24/7, you are subject to be hassled for any or no reason at all.

One reason I retired when I did was the fact that new recruits for Police are generally recruited based on the willingness to do as programmed without thinking. That in our situation simply means that any cop that sees you vaping, especially with a mod, may stop you based on the visual similarity to a .....

That said, they still have to have probable cause to do more than check what they see. It doesn't give license to search or sieze. Once stopped, if a cop has no smell of ........ or other court proven "suspicions" of illegal activity, the worst they can do lawfully is to waste a field test kit on your gear.

Even if they come off as hostile, don't give them a legit reason to give you a hard time! It is hard, especially for someone like myself to not call and ...... just that, an ....... Over 27 years though, I saw many times when a simple situation escalated into a legit violation because a citizen became physically confrontational. I never worked traffic enforcement but I have been stopped many times and had to bite my tongue over some jerk with a 10 pound badge.

Almost all states have dash cams in cruisers to document traffic stops and the same camcorder that makes a legit case can also expose an illegal action by the cops themselves. Just remember to keep your cool and if the cop goes beyond the realm of reasonable behavior, there are legal recourses for you to make sure jerks with a badge don't keep their ability to harass.

For even the most sincere, most have never even heard of an e-cig, much less seen one in action but for most dealings, keep your cool and you wont have any issues no matter how irritating it is to be stopped.

I agree and disagree with some of the sentiments expressed on this thread. While you have the right to tell a cop it's none of his business when he asks what a box mod or whatever is, it would be pretty stupid to do so. Most of the public doesn't know what a PV is and they certainly wouldn't recognize a box mod. With all the crazy bongs I've seen, it's an understandable mistake. I would politely explain what it was. I would probably allow the juice to be checked. I probably would resist, if it led to them asking to search my car but, that's me.

i know its hard to be cool when you think you are right but likes been stated most people said already most people dont know what a pv is much less a mod so in a leo eyes he thinks he is right because he thinks it suspicious activity so he can legally search your car but its like major s has said if you hassle them u can turn something that probably been nothing if u would be polite and explain to him what it is into a situation where you get a legit big fine or arrested.

Yeah, keep in mind what these guys and gals have to deal with on a daily basis. When you're out there getting paid to look out for anything suspicious, and everyone out there thinks they're just a "high school bully" looking for an excuse to ruin their day. People are rude, offensive, and violent. They try to lie and cover things up as if the officer had no brain. "No, officer, I haven't been drinking. That's just...... water in that vodka glass! Oh, it smells? err, um, yeah, there's just...some, um, residue?" After some time of dealing with bumbling idiots, some officers forget that these are people, just like them. just as most people forgotten that officers are people too. And it most definetly is a cop's business to ask you about your box mod. Although it is just nicotine and perfectly legal- how is he supposed to know that? It could very easily be something far worse. Someone could be vaping heroine, or even alcohol (there are some bars that feature an oxygen bar where you inhale alcohol) and it's impossible for them to know for sure that what you have is legal unless they ask- and they have every right to ask.
Now if you get defensive or start acting nervous/funny instead of just giving them a straight answer, they might get suspicious and want to run a test.
And if you have nothing to hide, then you shouldn't have any issues with that.

And Frank from Chicago- Thank you, so much for the service you provided for our country. Your bravery and sacrifice is what allows the rest of us to go about our happy little lives, safely ignoring the horrors that are going on overseas, and it doesn't go unnoticed. Thank you, and welcome home.

Regular ecigs are easier to explain. But what if I get pulled over and I'm vaping a box mod or tube mod. Why should they or would they not arrest me?
"This is the steam inhaler, I need for health." the electronic cigarette, nicotine and other things - about all this to talk later, with the appearance of additional interest...

Approach the officer like he/she is a reasonable human being and explain the function and purpose of your P.V. If the officer shows himself/herself to be an unreasonable human being, answer all their questions with the following two questions:

"Am I free to go?"
"Am I being detained or placed under arrest?"

If you're not asking those two questions, exercise your right to remain silent.

Hmm... I will bite my tongue and not say anything about all the name calling and disrespect for the people who make it so you can sleep safe at night.... but I will say this... a police officer is using a PV ... an ego to be exact.. and a group of teens comes up and says " holy sh@t. that cops smoking a one hitter" If it looks like a duck you dont know until you check it out and see its a short necked goose.. :)

I keep waiting to get pulled over with my eGo ( sort of looks like it might be something illegal )

The one time I saw a cop looking at me at a stoplight while I was vaping.. I thought he was going to pull me over, but instead he raised his own eGo that he was using and smiled... that is the first time I have ever seen anyone else with one of these things... not common around here.

How would (or do) you explain a P.V. mod to the police???

I'm required by law if pulled over to show my conceal carry license. This turns the discussion to guns. A pv is the last thing on a LEO's mind at this point.

They are either worried about an armed citizen (minority of LEOs) or want to know what I'm carrying, why I like it, what other guns do I have, discussions of ballistics, ad infitum. :)

As far as the other opinions go...I am always respectufl and frieldly to the police, they are doing the job ( either good or badly ) that we ask them to do.

Once I was going home after a first date ( I was much younger ) and I was pulled over by 2 police car and one unmarked detective car, no walking up to the window, it was guns out pointed at me asking me to show my hands and get out of the car.

I was polite ( chuckle ) and very cooperative.

Handcuffs on, ID pulled and then a conference over at one of the police cars... then handcuffs off, police apologized and left and the detective stayed to explain to me that the girl I just dropped off is well known to someone that just broke out of jail 2 days ago and I fit his description almost perfectly, the man is considered armed and very dangerous.

To me... they were doing their job, I was polite and cooperative, no one got hurt in a very dangerous situation.

I'm in the same boat. Only been pulled over once. It was kind of disappointing. I told him I was armed and handed him my permit with my license. He just said, "That's fine, Sir. Just make sure you leave it where it is."

Really, I wouldn't blame a LEO for wanting to know what a box mod was and I'd certainly explain it.

BTW my brother lives in Katy.

I can understand why some people are a little cop paranoid, and I can certainly understand that there are more than a few cops who are um... jerks, but I find that if you're overwhelmingly polite to them, it'll reciprocate in the end. For anyone who doesn't have that word in their vocabulary that means that your behavior reflects in the behavior of those around you. If you are paranoid and sketchy and refuse to cooperate, then cops will be paranoid and when cops are paranoid, they dig and search and ask you to get out of the car.

That being said, even though I'm usually not doing something illegal *cough* I will say no, or ask for a warrant and a lawyer if a cop asks if he can search my car. You do have the right to a lawyer present during all search and questioning. So if the cop is willing to wait for my lawyer, then sure, he can search my car.

As for the PV, there are so many non-smoker cops that have never touched or tried a cig. Those types of people whether they're cops or not, will not understand why "Someone who could just quit, has gone on to use another form of nicotine." It's the smokers that will be interested and curious. If you're really that paranoid, just put it in your pocket or purse and try to keep it out of sight if you get pulled over. If it's a routine stop, just take your ticket and go.
