Hammond said every source of evidence suggests that the labels do help people quit.

So how much do you want to bet that in the year the labels go into effect, several million smokers switch to e-cigs, and Hammond claims the smoking rates dropped because of the labels on cigarette packs?

hehe Vocalek, I wouldn't take that bet.

The only reason they (FDA) are doing this is b/c the "Philip Morris Act" requires them to. Like many have said, in Canada, Europe and many countries have been labeling death pictures on packs for years. It's a joke to many smokers in those countries. Smokers don't look at the labels, only non-smokers (who ARE repelled).

I heard this on the radio today. If they are going to use that rationale for tobacco then why not use "death" pictures for every vice in America.... Why not show DUI crash victims on every bottle of Vodka? Obesity is more of an epedemic than smoking is in this country; costs society more... why not put amputated limb pics and Type 2 Diabetes warnings in front of every fast food place in America?

Geez, it's amazing how patronizing our culture has become. It's not like smokers haven't gotten the memo a long time ago it is bad.

I read this article on aol news today, also. Well, there are now "coffee and hot chocolate are very hot" warnings at all the fast food drive throughs now . . . most of us who have been smokers know what our lungs looked like; how hard it was to breathe, etc. I think ads for ecigs on analog packs is a great idea! Won't happen, though.

The question in my mind is this: Are the graphic images designed to frighten smokers...or stigmatize them further?

OK folks....a great new busniess to get started before these go into effect next year. Start a printing business that makes stickers the same size as a pack of smokes. Put fun designs and slogans on them. Can probably make them on your home computer and sell online. ;)

I predict a comeback of old-fashioned cigarette cases!

A company in the UK has been doing this since 2003 when their new warning labels went into effect. BBC NEWS | Health | Spoof cigarette warnings slammed
And it looks like they are still in business, so there is obviously a demand. fakefags - we sell ... stickers, smoking stickers, health warning stickers to cover up the health warnings on UK cigarette packets, fake fags cigarette stickers

I love this from the BBC article - "Anti-smoking groups criticised the website and have urged smokers to spend money on nicotine replacement therapies instead."

L2.95 for about 2 weeks worth of stickers compared to the cost of NRT's for 2 weeks? The monetary angle makes for a really, really bad argument unless the Brits get NRT's for very cheap under their universal health care.

I still smoke a few cigs a day, so buy a pack a week. I will have a good time making my own stickers...should be fun. Maybe let everyone around me know that the FDA approved cigarettes, but not e-cigs....with this sticker.

I wonder how Big Pharma would feel about graphic photos of successful suicides on 'script bottles of Chantix; or graphic photos of stroke and heart attack victims on bottles of Avandia? What? ...not the same thing you(FDA, goverrnment, alphabet suits, Tobacco Control activists) say? ...or maybe you're just too scared to go after the Big Money, Big Power people, yeah that's right, go after a minority of ordinary citizens....demonize them, ostracize them, tax the #@$# out of them so you can look good, like you're really doing something.
Well you are doing something - you're being dishonest, manipulative, bullying, bigoted, intolerant and are collectively distorting and at times covering up the truth....and you know what, it's killing people and spreading hate and intolerance like a cancer across the world. Decades of lies about 'secondhand smoke' over-blown statistics, made up statistics, shoddy junk science, manipulation and intimidation of truth tellers(mostly scientists and researchers) leading to a cataclysm of oppressive and bigoted legislation designed to further an elitist and pathological agenda and line the pockets of TC activists, attorneys, health agencies, some health professionals, and governments. You want to talk about "warning labels????" how about a warning label affixed to the complicit Health agencies in the TC movement saying "Caution: This agency has been known to actively distort health information and withold scientific findings re: Harm Reduction. This agency may be HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH" and
"This governmental agency does not adequately disclose serious conflicts of interest when it comes to approval/denial decisions concerning products for human consumption. This Federal agency has been known to obscure scientific health facts and engage in political propaganda, fear-mongering, deception through omission and collusion with 'for profit' Corporations for reasons other than and at times contrary to Public Health, This agency may be HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH.
Sorry for the rant....I felt the need to vent. I'll go work on "scary pictures" for my proposed warning labels.

It still won't stop people from buying them. Everyone already knows that they cause all types of health problems. I wonder how much the person who came up with this got paid. What a crock! I vote for an e-cig ad to be placed on them. That would get everyone's attention.

Hey FDA! How about "E-cigs, the safer alternative to smoking!"

I agree...should be a big rise in buying them. Good for the economy.....

As tc9 mentioned, these images aren't meant for us...they are meant for the non-smokers around us. So, if others are going to be watching what I am doing, I plan to really give them something to see. Nudie pics on my pack of cigs!!!!! LMAO :D

Hah! Good one. How about adding the portraits of every elected official who accepts bribe money aka campaign contributions from BT? How about portraits of every past & present FDA director? Presidents? Packs could become collectibles, like playing cards.
