Yes - I am repeating myself . . . However, I just finished up for the day and after what I have seen today - I really can't wait to see what happens here in FT Lauderdale when "Matthew" hits and then the aftermath around here . . . The last 2 hurricanes I went through were "Wilma" and then while I was in NYC/Philadelphia it was "Sandy" (YES - I just had to be up North when a Hurricaine was coming through . . . 
) - Let's just say the majority of people were either "stupid" or "crazy" . . .

Sent some pictures of Andrew and Wilma to my family in S FL, it was enough to convince them to come up to our place on the Gulf coast thankfully. I have many friends from West Palm Beach to Melbourne though.
Latest, seems to be a landfall between Vero and Daytona Beach as a strong Cat 4 with a storm surge of 13 feet. There is going to be a tremendous loss of structure, but that can be replaced.
If you decide NOT TO evacuate please stay where you are when the storm begins. Do not attempt to get on the roads during the thick of the storm and wait until after the storm passes to call for help. Storm surge is the number one killer with these storms and number two is people coming to help those who are trapped during the storm. If you aren't leaving, hunker down and let us know you are safe after the storm passes.

Robin i'm sure you saw this morning that they re saying Mat is expected to make landfall at Fort Pierce. Your MIL still not willing to evac?
Edit: Now they say landfall is at Cape Canaveral area.

I hope everyone evacuates that needs to because it is so much better to be safe and dry than trapped in a flood with high winds. It is just so much easier to get out while there is still time. Be safe !

That is what is coming to Fort Pierce. I hope you are not on the Island at least. I am very familiar with that area as living in PSL for 4 years.

This is pretty much the worst imaginable scenario for much the east coast of FL -- a Cat 4 strafing the entire coastline from just north of West Palm Beach all the way up to Jacksonville.
When we left on Tuedsay, we had planned to come back on Sunday or Monday. At this point, I really don't think there's going to be anything to come back to.

It is looking scary out there, hope everyone has bugged out! Have some of hubby's family there but they are gulf side or farther inland.
MIL finally agreed to shelter at our house. We are hunkered in for the duration.
This house was built in 2004 so good on hurricane codes. We also have a metal roof. We are just outside of the flood zone for a small river that flows behind our development.
Daddy, we are not on the island. We are a little further than 6 miles west from Indian River Lagoon.

Since you aren't on the Island or near the IRL flooding shouldn't be an issue. Wind will be the main problem.
Stay safe, and get your metal detector ready, there will be gold found on the beach just south of FT Pierce Inlet.
On a serious note, I am glad to hear your MIL decided to evacuate and you guys sound like you are in a relatively safe location. Looking forward to hearing you are safe and sound in the morning.

I think most of the ones that stay and "Ride it Out" have never been through a BAD hurricane like this one. If anything cat 3 or above was heading for me I would already be gone. These bad boys are nothing to take lightly when they get that strong.

Robin are you sure you're safe? I dont know how close to the beach you are but thry're talking 20' surges. Will being 6 miles away protect you from the surge's effect?
