I dual-used for less than a week, but I could already feel the improvement, cutting down from 40 to 4, then 2, then 1.
I dual used for the first 9 months or so, but I was down the first week from 2 PAD to about 6 cigs a day. The funny part is that I probably could have quit all cigs the first week or two and didn't realize it.
That said, I wouldn't encourage people to quit too soon and revert back. Let the vape convince you that you are through with the smokes and then give quitting a try. Cut it down by half, then go from there and decide how many to smoke while vaping begins to give you confidence in its ability to take away the rest of the smokes.
For me, I needed 2 with morning coffee, one after each meal, and one before bed. I continued that longer than I needed to, but I was in uncharted territory with few references to compare. vaping was still very new in 2010.
