If anybody already has this working with 901 whistle tip carts, please share your method.

If not... I reckon I'll forge ahead blindly!

I dont know much about 901's but if there is no lip at the top to catch the spring try running it vertical instead.. some here have done that with the 801's im not sure how close they are... Im using whistle 510 carts, however there no difrent on the inside then the round..

Hey scottbee, this is what I'm doing with the 901 carts. Working really well. I'm having better luck using poly also.

Dirt...

Any idea what the cut-length is on your spring? Give-or-take...

I've got it at half the depth of the cart. I found it easier to actually get the spring down into the bottom by cutting off the ends of the spring, the part where the coils are tight against each other. It's a bit of a trial actually getting the spring inserted but it seems to be worth the effort so far. I just cram the thing down to the bottom of the cart. I end up with the spring completely compressed in the bottom. Then I hook the upper end of the spring and pull up so the top of the spring is right about in the middle of the cart. Somewhat loose plug of poly and good to go.

Luck

I'm playing with this on a 901 whistle tip. Too early for a full review, but here are some observations:

Put the spring in lengthwise. I used my nippers to grab the end of the spring and "unscrew" it a bit.. making the spring conical in shape. Big end went into the bottom of the cart. That made it a little bit of a press fit... now the spring won't fall out and it stays centered in the cart.

I held the little "ball" of filler in my tweezers and "singed" the ball with my Bic lighter. That got rid of all of the errant fibers (that often end up down in the atty) and made the ball "hold together" a bit nicer on removal. It just made for a nicer "plug".

Do you mean to stand it up in the cart? I lost one spring earlier so I thought I didn't have it tight enough and it fell out. This last one seemed to go further in the cart on one side because there doesn't seem to be much of a ledge for it to sit on. So far it is working fine though.

Whistle tip means flat not round, correct?

Yes.. I mean "stand it up". 901 whistle tip (flat) carts don't have a ledge in them like the 510's do. So putting the spring in "sideways" won't really work since it can slide or be pushed down all the way to the bottom.

I think some of the other methods work more like an oversoaked sponge to loosely hold the liquid.

This may work more like those envelope moisteners - the liquid is more or less held back by the cap until it is drawn through by the negative pressure.

Carts could eventually look something like this, with a sealed reservoir chamber and a sponge-like cap that pops or screws in place:

Kristin,

I think you hit the nail right on the head. Something like this could/should be the future of cartridges. The "membrane" top cap should either pop off (small sucker.. easy to lose) or be in a little hinge (molded plastic hinge). You pop it open, put in your 15+ drops, and snap it shut. No tweezers or voodoo required. The membrane top then comes in contact with the atty bridge when you put the cartridge on the PV.

The "spring mod" gets you the functional effect... the hinged membrane top just makes it a lot easier to use.

scottyb,

i'm using 901 whitstle tips with your mod... exactly as you describe in your first post.
to get around the problem of no lips on the inside of the cart what i did was to cut the spring a bit too long and use hemostats to compress the spring for insertion.

if you picture the 901 cart as a D shape, put the spring in going from the top of the D to the bottom (parallel to the the straight edge). my spring slightly bowed out when the spring compression was released so i had to recess it slightly farther, but the tension of the larger spring is definatly holding it in place perfectly.

hope this helps you and all 901 users.

and props to scottyb for the thought!

Just a quick note. Scotty was not the first person who came up with this idea. Props to him for bringing it up and doing an instructional video! I heard of this idea before, it just did not make "functional" sense because of potential leaking. The response on this thread MADE me try it, and thank god I did! So, props to the original individual with the idea, and to Scotty for reinforcing the idea ;-). I do not want to discredit Scotty, but giving him all the props would be discrediting others who worked hard at a solution also.

Just to let you know Ive not heard of anything like this.. I was at work with 5 carts modded with PTB.. I would get a few good hits then I would have to top off ... hit a few more... top off again. So I figured why not just fill the thing up with juice and cap it.. well the only other thing I had was the filler that came in the carts... I was going threw a junk drawer looking for somthing to hold up the plug and picked up a pen when It hit me I could cut the spring down wedge it in there to hold up a peice of polly... I tried it and it worked so I did a write up and video.. if sombody else thought of it before me kudo's to them... But saying that im just reinforcing sombodys else's Idea is somwhat discrediting to me.. but whatever im not trying to be the hero of e-cig forums I just wanted to help some others out with a Idea I had while working.;)

I think that one of the original "ideas" for this mod was to have a spring in there that would keep the filler pressed against the atty bridge. In other words, a soft spring that is inserted in the cartridge lengthwise. As it turns out, having the spring press the filler up isn't nearly as important as the air space that the spring created!

I don't know WHY this works, but I know THAT this works. I did two carts last night and haven't had a leak or drip yet. And no gurgling, regardless of how I hold my 510. Before this, I was a fan of the PTB mod, but would sometimes get gurgling and leakage. I couldn't wait to get to work today to look for clicky pens to "accidentally" take home in my pocket!

same as here in the german ERF board the question came up wether the springs are safe to use. so, one guy had a quick idea that at the same time makes it unnecessary to search for additional stuff to use, its all there with our carts on the 510.

i think we all know the small condoms thats delivered with the carts ?
he cut 3mm wide of it off and used that as a vertical spring.

i try it out now. this way, those with worries about the metal spring should be safe and they don't have to search the house or stores for springs or foams.
