Pictor - you gave that baby a good life for 6 years. That's a lot more than many get. You did a good thing.

Some of the rescues we've fostered came in too sick or old to be adopted so we kept them until the end of their lives. After a few of the heartbreaking ones, we had to stop taking the sick ones. It wasn't fair to my husband who works at home and ended up being the caregiver for dogs that I committed to.

Now, we will do short term fosters or outright adopt. I still try to help our breed rescue as we can when needed in our area.

Our dogs bring a lot of joy to our lives especially since the kids are grown.

When I did fostering, the first blue tick hound I had was found by animal control at a house where the lady had 25 cats. Animal Control was there to tell her that all of her cats had to be vaccinated against rabies...state law! So he noticed this pup that was all skin and bones and took him. I was at the vet with one of my cats for a well check visit when they brought him in. The puppy was so malnourished that after I got him home, when you took him outside, you had to hold him up so he could potty. He could barely walk. The lady wouldn't allow him to eat so he would leave. I kept him for 6 months before he was placed in a home to become the most pampered hunting dog ever! I wanted to keep him but this dog was a real hunter so he needed to be somewhere and do what he most wanted to do and that was hunt. My daughter named him Burton.

Been there, done that. Took in a doberman female that was being used for a dropper. Her spirit was broken. She did not care if she lived or died. 2 months later, I could not have asked for a more loving and loyal friend. A month after that, they asked if I would take a male doberman who was being abused because he failed the security dog test - he could not be called off once sent to attack.

Took the female in 2 days before the male was to arrive to see about getting her fixed. I did not want to put her through that again. Vet said she was too scarred up inside, no way she could get pregnant. 5 weeks later it was obvious she was pregnant. She had 13 puppies.

Found them all very good, loving homes to police officers and fire fighters. Got her fixed after that. She was 8 when she had the puppies. She died 5 years later and the male's heart was so broken he stopped eating. Lost him 2 weeks after.

I refused to go through that again. I stopped fostering. Fast forward to last February and I find I am bringing home a beautiful 1 year old Brindle Boxer. She is a wonder that brings joy into my life every single day.

Not really, I just wanted to show off the lab that rescued us today. We lost our beloved lab in April to cancer and vowed to never go through that again.

Good looking dog there! She's a keeper ❤

This was the one that pushed me over the edge on fostering. We tried so hard with this one. We have fostered since but not as much.

This article got published in Toy Breeds magazine back in 2005 also trying to bring awareness about backyard breeders.

National Brussels Griffon Rescue, Inc.

Touching story. Currently,we have four rescue cats. Two almost didn't make it, but with some luck steroids, antibiotics, etc. They are all doing well now.

All of my previous dogs have been rescues. All of my cats. Some horses and 3 out of 4 parrots. Thank you for realizing you don't need a baby animal to form a lifelong bond :)

The only reason my current dog isn't a rescue is due to special circumstances. I needed a guard dog immediately and this one was socialized with horses, cats and parrots. So she seemed the dog I should get.

Nice looking Lab!!!

I had to put my Lab mix Marley(14.5 yrs old) down a few months ago... I found him on the street in the rain in an industrial area in Los Angeles in 2000.

I went crazy for month... I was depressed, angry and not motivated to do anything.

I have a friend who volunteers at my local shelter and he was keeping an out for a dog for me... he found a lab so I went to look at her.

She was 40lbs and 8 months old... I took her home that day and named her Maggie (after my mother who passed 3 years ago to stage 4 lung cancer)

She just turned one last Saturday....

Picture one is her adoption photo at the shelter, second one is a pic I took of her in the cage at shelter, third pic is in my yard and fourth pic is of her on couch.

A pic of Marley is in my Provarinati signature...

Maggie looks just like my black lab Angel, she and I were best friends for 13 years she passed last October. And my cat Sisco passed about two weeks later I had him for about 12 years, they were the best of friends I miss them both everyday. And like you I lost it for awhile, two so close together I just couldn't take it. I vowed never to get another animal again after that, but I saw a picture of a rescue at my vets office and a few days later in December she came home with me.

I named her Marley. She has been a saving grace, I never thought I would care for another animal like this but she proved me wrong.

I know what you mean about losing pets... its tougher than people think.

Putting Marley down was the toughest thing I have ever had to do SOBER... if it wasnt for that dog I would have been dead, in jail or god knows where years ago.

Marley let me to a better way of life without alcohol so i owed him alot... but he did his job and it was his time to go and not suffer in pain.

I was goin to wait awhile to get a dog but then someone sent me this poem... that poem tugged at my heart strings and I knew I NEEDED to get another dog and it must be from the shelter.

Also, keep in mind animal lifespans. If you are 50 years old, obtaining a baby large macaw probably isn't a good idea. You are unlikely to live 50-70 more years. And be able to move and clean a huge cage. There are older macaws who would be happy to be your new friend.

That bird in my avatar? He's at least 31 years old and lived with his previous owner for 28 years. It took us a whole 2 days to start bonding. On day 4 he cuddled up with me :). And he's a wild caught parrot, not a human raised baby.
