No you don't need both. I'd say the ecig and cartomizers because they are the easiest. The clearomizers would be an extra to try out at this point.
I would go with Clearomizers, they hold more juice and you can see how much you have left in it (hence the "clearo", even tho they come in diff colors). Kangers are good, CEx's are ok (my own opinion).
The ones kiwivap recommended are good "X2 - T3 Bottom Coil Clearomizer", they are basically a tank with an atomizer changeable head, aka once you have one tank you only need to replace the atomizer head (you will understand once you hold one in your hand or with more research).

Sounds good, I just thought maybe there was, figured I'd give you a local option.

I figured getting him started with a ego kit and clearo (with no changing head, aka CE4, open, fill, close, vape) was the simpler way to go but that's my opinion.

Yes, Ego or X2. I think cartomizers would be better for starters. They are easier, and then add clearos. From a reputable vendor with good customer service.
