ironic... They can't vape, they can't buy e-cig supplies, they can't get on vendor sites, yet we have our word filter turned up to "toddler safe"?

No one is forcing you to stay here, Quick1. I hear there are other forums out there where cursing is not only allowed, it's encouraged.

Just my :2c:

Personally, I don't curse, but I'm a growup and I'm not offended by those who do. Some "curse" words have become so mainstream that it's just a part of some people's regular vocabulary that they use in the course of normal communication. I do not believe it's a good thing in front of children. Mainly for the sexual connotations or imagery behind some of those words and less so for the implication that shouting or shock value somehow imparts more logic, credability, or "power" behind what you're saying. For that reason I can see language restrictions where the intended audience includes minors. Is that the case here?

So if we don't allow rampant cursing, we are catering to children? There are many adults who find it distasteful, you know.

This is an international forum with members from all walks of life. We are also one of the first places that people come to get information on e-cigarettes, whether they are for them, or against them. The forum owner wishes this forum to appear more professional than some others, and since he's the boss, that's the way the forum will be run.

That's pretty much the end of the story. This is one thing that will not be changing.

My personal opinion is that cursing for no reason, except to use those words, is crude and immature. When we are talking, occasionally a word may slip out, but when typing, there is no excuse for it. So far, I have not joined any forums that allow or encourage foul language.

If the ECF were to allow it, I would leave the forum and I believe many other members would leave also.

Angus, now you know how to get rid of me !!!!! :p

Continuing to uphold a certain level of professionalism on this site is rather important. As had been stated before, we are more than likely being monitored by anti-ecig activists and the government. We need to create a favorable impression since this is probably the largest and most informative site concerning the ecig and its accouterments.

On that note, I do not have an issue with explicatives but do think that strong statements can be made without them. By not using them, you lend more credence to your argument.

NOTE: In the coming months even years, I think we will need all the good will and credibility we can manage to fight big tobacco, the FDA, and the government.

rampant? that's why there are moderators.

Anyway, sorry to hit a hot button. I wasn't asking for a change. It doesn't effect me (I seem to be able to draw ire quite easily without cursing). It was just a comment on the irony of an adult subject matter site with filters turned up higher than the FCC's for TV. Nothing more than that. The anticipated response was something like "LOL, you're right".

That's pretty much the end of the story. This is one thing that will not be changing.

As above. I wasn't asking for justification or change.

The original question was "what is the rationale there if the message is private?" Which, in my humble opinion, was answered quite nicely in Quick1's first posting, although he/she is definitely in the minority.

I have to admit that I was shocked by some of the responses and how quickly a few started dusting off their soapboxes.

It might be irrelevant at this point to say that I was just looking for some type of clarification. I guess even this old gal has a few lessons still to learn in communication skills. I'll be looking into taking some classes.

I don't know anything about forum software and code, but perhaps it would be somewhat difficult to set up the censor, to distinguish between a PM and a post on the open forum. It may just be more logical to censor everything. Perhaps Alex can clarify this for us?

I can clarify it. The forum software makes no distinction between posts in a forum, or a PM. The filter, by default, applies to the entire site. There are no checkboxes (or whatever) to apply the filter to individual portions of it.

It's either on, or it's off. In this case, it is on.

:toast:

I HAVE joined other forums that DO allow it, but as you see my post count, I tend to hang out HERE, where the cursing and bullying arent allowed. ;)

I DO look for info in other places, but have found ECF to be bountiful as far as researching and discussing e-cigs goes. The "other places" seem to be more about newbie VS oldies, and horses being beat to death in a bullying manner when someone types something that offended another, even when unintentional. Ive NOT had anyone be mean to ME, but seeing it done to others is enough for me to stay where I feel more welcome in general...essentially here. :D

I even got a warning for "evading forum censors", but I really didnt...it just happened to APPEAR as I did. But, I took the warning with a grain of salt, as I know I wasnt being picked on, the computer software was just doing its job.... BUT...I WOULD be upset if I had been banned for it when I had no idea what I did ;)

Exactly Jerry. I feel it takes a higher degree of intelligence to drive your point across sans gutter mouth. Heck anyone can yell and cuss and swear. Doesn't make them an adult anymore than it makes them intelligent........
