This thread has taken me back, lol. My husband used to give me a hard time about trying to hide smoking from my parents. He'd say, "Just be a woman and tell them!" Then he got to know my mom better and finally one day said, "I understand now why you don't tell your mom certain things. Sometimes honesty is not the best policy with her." Maybe my mom was an Asian mom in a previous life. It doesn't make me feel great that even now I perpetuate this lie to her, but it doesn't wrack me with guilt either. She just doesn't need to know, and I'm okay with that.
Now I'm a mom myself, and I do hope that my kids will be (mostly) honest with me. I hope that I am sufficiently different from my mother that they feel they can tell me things, but I don't expect that they will tell me everything. I do think that they are entitled to their privacy in certain areas and I hope that they will make good decisions, but expect that they will also occasionally make some bad ones.
Good luck to you girlintheword. While omitting certain details of your life from your parents' knowledge may or may not be a good thing, depending on your situation, obviously quitting smoking is a GREAT thing. I wish you much success!
