Somewhere in west-central Oregon. Newport to Coos Bay, or maybe inland a bit to Corvallis if the cost of living and job opportunities there are sufficient to get me away from the immediate coast.

I grew up in Coos Bay/North Bend. For me, it is a good place to visit and see my family, but I couldn't live there again. I've lived in our very near too many big cities since then. In the future, my wife and I are looking into the Eugene or Portland areas. Seattle WA is also on our list.

It's only a two hour drive from where I'm considering to Portland (entirely TOO big for my taste) or Eugene. Corvallis is about one hour. So, if I need to buy a car or some other high ticket item, I don't see the problem. I like small. :D

EDIT: Too late for me to edit my original post in this thread. But, if I could literally live anywhere on the planet I chose ... I would have to give some serious consideration to New Zealand. I'd have to study it a lot more closely than I have done so far though, and scope it out in person. :)

I've been to Alaska 4 times on lay-overs. Granted, can't tell much from the airport lobby. but, it reminded me of Michigan in the winter. Had to walk from the plane to the building. Wasn't as cold as I thought it's be. The cost of living though! A plain hotdog was $5.00! That was in '81 and '82. I really hope that was just airport prices.

Definitely airport prices, LOL! I've actually done quite a bit of research on the cost of living there. It's a little higher than where I'm living now, but not by much.

That would be killer! Not sure I could live on one, but the thought of at least owning one and having the whole sea to explore does appeal to me. That is truly freedom!

:)
That's one of my life long dreams. Just sailing around the world on a huge sailboat. Also I want to go scuba diving but can't because of ear pressure problems. I can't go below 10 feet, even 10 feet is painful and I can't pop my ears! It drives me insane.

Also, I get really sea sick. Last time I was on a sailboat wayyyy out in the ocean I got so sick I puked up my promethazine. Bahahah.

There are a few times that I didn't get sick at sea though, and wow it's one of the most amazing feelings I've ever felt. I love the ocean. I bet I'd love being in the waters that the deadliest catch guys fish. That'd be one hell of a scary ride. :toast:

One good thing about Oregon is no sales tax. I love walking into a store and paying what the price tag says.
You mentioned that you lived in or near Coos Bay. Ever been to Sunset Bay State Park? I accidently stumbled upon it on my first visit to Oregon, and the next year I went out of my way to return there. I love that place! Maybe it's not so popular with locals, but I love it!

I'd admired Oregon from afar for literally, decades, before I took my first sightseeing vacation there. The climate, geology, rain forests ... it's all good. I've seen more of Oregon (as a tourist) than I've seen of Florida. And, I've lived here most of my life. I've got real plans to relocate there. Working on obstacles. I'm fully aware that there's a difference between visiting and living in any given place. I've done homework. Relocating to the opposite corner of the country isn't a decision I take lightly. Well, at least not since I was in my twenties, LOL

DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS!
never been to Oregon, but i figure there must be something to it that makes it real special, cuz "local" Hawaiians...kama'ainas who cant afford to live in their own beloved state, tend to move there. so to choose to move to Oregon from paradise, speaks volumes.
i have friends from LaPine/Bend area, and they love it.

I know right??? I read this book called The Curve of Time Once about a woman who spent all summer with her kids on a Chris Craft. Really good book.

I have lived in the mountains, its great, currently live right on the ocean... and that gets REAL OLD. To be honest I hate the tourist. Going to the store is like a 2 hour event in the middle of summer here. I loved it when i first got here... did a ton of water sports, Now i can't wait to leave this place. Don't like walking outside with 120 heat index and instantly feeling drained... I plan on moving back up north to Pittsburgh, but if i could live anywhere i would like to go to the UK and check it out :)

Wisconsin
I'm pretty happy in Wisconsin. Wisconsin is a paradise for nature lovers. The state is really varied, and has something for everyone. If you want to feel like you're by the ocean, you can go to Lake Michigan, there are a lot of nice smaller lakes and lots of trees. The Mississippi River is just so cool. We have a great State Park system. There are a lot of great hiking trails, fun festivals, good food, nice people...

Milwaukee is fun, and Chicago isn't a bad place to be near.

I've been to a lot of places, but Wisconsin is home for me, and I plan on staying.

Fall is especially lovely here.

That's fantastic. Nice to hear someone loves it right where they are. I wish I felt the same way about my present home.

I've spent a little time along the upper Mississippi and St. Croix Rivers near Minneapolis.
