If you have Comcast internet you can get Norton for free.

I'd personally suggest anyone really looking in to AV software right now, even if it's not "free from a vendor," check out:

http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/stories/test/performance/performance_dec_2010.pdf

It does include AVs such as Norton (FWIW: after being around computers since literally 1990, and having worked several IT positions, trust me when I say do NOT use Norton).

Personally, I find Avira to be much more responsive and trustworthy, although now it seems like a newer product K7 is the king. I'll have to find a "demo" for it. :)

I used Norton back in the day. THen they started to charge way too much for updates so I dropped them. Then I got Comcast and got the free McAfee and I hated it because it would bring my computer to a crawl. When they switched to Norton, I did notice my computer would run faster than with McAfee. I am not overly excited about either of them but I can't complain about the price. I have tried other FREE stuff in the past and only ran into more problems than they were worth. So I guess I will be stuck with the free Comcast stuff for now.

Wow.. I'm quite surprised to see so much negative feedback about NAV. It's worked fantastic for me for many years, with no problems what so ever. Just trying to help out my fellow vapers who are broke and need protection. It's free. It's legitimate. It works.

I hope I helped somebody.

P.S. 't3ase', it is also a personal preference thing. Norton protects computers from viruses. People that have Comcast, who are broke, and not so PC savvy can benefit from it's use. If that's their only option, and they follow your advise 'don't use Norton', are you going to travel to their home and fix their PC when it gets infected? I didn't think so.

Trust ME when I say, don't surf the net unprotected. It's free for Comcast users and it works just fine. It's VERY easy to install. Don't listen to all the Norton haters out there.

I use the Anit-Virus, reluctantly. I consider it a downgrade from the McAfee they offered FREE previously though. But, it's the entire security suite which is the hog. And, the challenge of ending the numerous default non-virus related background tasks ... some of which are seeminly impossible to kill without complete uninstallation. What I would choose would be to ONLY watch for virus unless I specifically instruct another task to be performed. Norton just consumes too much of my resources.

But, on a newer JC with horsepower to spare (I always want MORE HP than I've got) it might be ok. Nice of you to let folks know ... but, perhaps a warning was in order. So, now they've got it from the responses, LOL.

Peace.

Thing is, I have an old piece o'crap (AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+ Dual Core, 1GB RAM) and it works just fine...? I've never noticed a considerable drain on resources... well, to each their own.

Weird . . . I use AMD Athlon X2 64bit with 4 gigs of RAM . . . y'know . . . it may actually be because I'm using Norton 360 right now. I used to love the Norton Antivirus . . . maybe it's all that extra crap that I don't like.

I use Comcast and the free Norton and all was working great with Mozilla until the recent upgrade to Mozilla 4. Now my Norton is not compatible with the upgrade.

Another thing is that now...every time I log on to ECF, my computer seems caught in a loop. It is only this site that does it. Skip-skip-skip-skip....freaking sucks I need alien Ware...or want
