I just passed 8 months :)

Strangely, the thought of smoking a cigarette has been coming to mind more in the past couple weeks than in all the prior months. I think it's because I've spent time sitting on my front porch with a cup of coffee on nice days and I always used to smoke when I did that. It's not a temptation or a craving, really, just fleeting thoughts.

But this is exactly why I've not pushed myself to drop my nicotine level further or give up vaping. I don't honestly know if I'd continue to stay away from cigarettes if I didn't have my ecig. When I hit a point where I don't fear going back to smoking again, that's when I'll decide if I want to keep vaping just for the enjoyment of it. For now, though, I know I still need this.

For a while, I carried around a "panic kit" in my purse. Did you know that one cigarette and a disposable lighter fit perfectly into an empty blue Commit container?
Good to know, thankfully at this point it would take me over ten minutes just to find a lighter or matches in my house.

just hit the one week mark yesterday :) I've been using a PV since Feb though. I have been down to like 2-3 analogs then I skipped a day with no analogs...the next day I tried to smoke one and it was discusting so i threw it out....and haven't had one since. Hardest part for me is learning how to deal with my anxiety without the "out" of smoking. Its usually my go too stress releiver but im learning :)

In 7 more days it will be one year for me.
So I could have either waited 7 days to answer, or just cheat a little.

So yeah, I cheated.
:)

Also, for a bit more cheating, I should mention that I have one cigarette maybe every couple of months.
I don't think it counts, I don't need it in any way, and don't care if I never have one again.

But yeah, for fun, I have one sometimes.
I like the feeling of how much power it no longer has over me.

I have no fear of cigarettes now.
In fact I laugh in their little tar-filled faces and spit on their burnt carcasses.

I'm not positive I understand your point. I chose "longer than 3 months", but I soon would have been able to select "longer than 6 months" ... there has to be divisions somewhere for there to be multiple choices. Or, am I complettely missing it? You mean because of the 70%? Hmmm, so maybe she should only asked those 3 months in, to re-establish the original findings. <sigh> I don't know, I'm tired and probably confused.

that was my thought.....if the intent is to show that ecigs are a better way to quit smoking because we have a better quit rate than 30%, it is significant if those under 3 months are merely on the way to six months.....

I've had a half a pack sitting right here in plain view of where I am most of the day for the past almost year, I guess, and haven't even seriously wanted to light one. I keep saying I'm going to just to see what I think, but I still haven't. In fact, I've been rolling cigs for a friend (who says vaping makes her cough) for the past week or so and still don't care about it. I am gonna light one some day, though. :)

I quit once the first time I started vaping for 3 weeks. Had a bad batch of batteries and basically forced myself to smoke again because I couldn't afford more batteries and accessories to go with.
I started vaping again around November with caution. It took me longer to like vaping more than smoking the second time . Not sure if it was a mental not ready to quit thing or the juice was different flavor then I had before. It took me a while to find juice the second time. The first time I thought thats all there was so I got use to it. It could have also just been a case of being gun shy after the first experience.

Now I have been cig free for about 46 days or so. I have no intention of smoking regularly again. I am like some OP who say they may light one to see what it is like , or laugh about the control it had over me. But I really don't want or am afraid to because I saw how much longer it took me to vape the second time around.

I would venture to guess that most who go back to smoking within the first three months are experiencing cravings or stressors. The neat thing about the PV is that you can increase your nicotine intake to supress these sabateurs. And that's the problem with nicotine weaning and/or abstinence. There's no relief. The sabateurs do you in.

It's a lot easier to stay away from smoking if you aren't experiencing the need to smoke.

Yes, and even more impressive is that 25% of vapors have now passed the 1 year mark.

Here is an article about duration of cessation and relapse rates:

About.com: http://www.scienceblog.com/community/older/2002/G/20021535.html

Relapse rates for smokers trying to quit have been estimated to range from 60 percent to 90 percent within the first year.

I'd be willing to bet that our relapse rates are much much lower, because we are not fighting the effects of nicotine abstinence.
