So apparently I'm having issues of my own. External HDD decided to take a dump. Stuck in seek mode, can't access any of my files, and we're talking close to 10 years worth of stuff I've collected... Very depressing.

Stick it in the freezer at least overnight and get a drive big enough to hold the information you want to save. After it's been in the freezer at least 24 hours you should get at least 2 hours of normal operation out of it. I've even been able to salvage the data on drives with the click of death twice that way.
