Wait a minute...Ely, MN.?
"Northeast Minnesota City Trying to Treat E-Cigarettes like Synthetic Drugs...

According to Ely Echo, the Ely City Council held a first reading on Tuesday of an ordinance that would declare a moratorium on the sale and use of synthetic drugs AND electronic cigarettes within the city of Ely. If this ordinance becomes law, this would mean that a store wishing to sell cigarettes would be free to open in Ely, but a store wanting to sell e-cigarettes and help people stop smoking would be banned from doing so for a period of months (possibly even a year).

Ely, which is along the Canadian border, is a very small city, but e-cigarette users must fight back against bans because they often spread to larger cities".

OK, what's to become of all this?!? The Canadian border? Little Ely? God have mercy on us!

"CASAA is asking its Minnesota vapers to reach out to the members of the Ely City Council below with their vaping success stories".

Yup, we should all join the club!!!

Minnesota has quickly become ground zero for eliminating electronic cigarettes.
My question is why?

A while back, I did email officials in Duluth, MN. I got an email back within a couple hours...and it wasn't one of those "canned" autoreplies, either. I promptly typed a polite, appreciative reply.

Even though I don't live in Duluth, it was obvious that my email HAD been read. So, we are getting through.

We need more Minnesotans to join CASAA and, if possible, follow the calls to action. I know I wouldn't want to face a winter up there with the prospect of having to go outside to vape!

Shaming people into joining will not get people to join.
The more someone pushes me, the harder I resist. Same when I smoked.
Some of us have more passion in regards to CASAA, a banner may get noticed and it may not. I tend to not look at the banners, not everyone does.
People new to vaping are more interested in having their quit record in their sig. That's what keeps them on track with vaping. They have the right to be proud of that fact. Just as you have the right to be proud of the fact that you are a member of CASAA. Guilt only works on kids......when they are very young ;)

We have done an amazing job of getting CASAA out into the threads. Membership is growing at a great pace. Yes, we need more voices, we need to just be careful that we don't alienate while trying to get more to join.

I understand the frustration and passion. It seems like every vaper should be on board. Not everyone has the same level of passion. It just isn't going to happen. That's what makes us all unique. I guess what I'm trying to say, browbeating and guilt heaping really doesn't work all that well.

Just say what is in your heart. Why have you joined CASAA?

I joined because I want my voice to be as loud as possible. In our collective voices, we WILL become a roar that they can NOT ignore.

*stepping off soapbox*

Sorry if I stepped on any toes.

I think if we get at the cause of why the majority of vapers are not members of CASAA, then we may be able to make suggestions on how to make the message more effective. When you look at the numbers, the results are quite small, based only on ECF, which is just a fraction of those who vape. And this post is by no means critical of the hard work done by those who volunteer to run CASAA.

Maybe ask in a way that doesn't sound off putting.

Kind of like:

I'm curious, of those that haven't joined CASAA, what are your reasons?

What concerns you about the process? If it is money related, it costs nothing to join. They are only funded by donations, but you do not need to pay to join. The board of directors are voluntary, giving of their free time to fight where it is needed.

Please ask any questions you have about what CASAA is.

That "form" of a question works for me. I would really like to know because one, I can't see the logic in why at least every active ECF member is not also a CASAA member and two, how can the CASAA message be delivered more effectively.

I've been trying to figure both of those things out for well over three years now.

I can understand people thinking it won't do any good so why bother?
I don't agree with that, and the short history of e-cigarette advocacy has shown otherwise, but I can still understand the thinking.

But why not at least join?
It costs nothing and only takes a minute.

Maybe there are a lot more people adverse to joining organizations than I would have imagined.

I started this thread when I noticed the huge disparity between ECF membership and CASAA membership. Then I noticed that none of the thread TITLES mentioned CASAA in the two most active forums (New Member and General). It was not an attempt to guilt people into joining or give anyone an excuse to showboat about how much they do for CASAA. I was curious as to the reasons for not joining. Nothing more. Maybe our posts on this thread should all start with, "I joined CASAA because..."

I joined CASAA because I wanted to be part of a cause that I strongly believe in, and I (perhaps naively) believe that simply by being part of that 6800 I will make a difference. I know I probably could do more, and I might do more at some point, but until then...

If just one person joined as a result of this thread, then it was well worth the five minutes it took to type the original post.
If yet another person is now familiar with CASAA and its mission, then it also was worth those five minutes...(yes, even if that person elects NOT to join).

I joined CASAA so that my voice could be added to those that are already fighting for ME.

I have stated, probably more than you all want to hear again , that I didn't fight when smoking was being banned. I believed that it was bad for me and those around me. I will fight for keeping e-cigs a viable alternative because I do believe they are not harming me and those that I love around me.
