This is the first year I've properly tried to grow anything. My granny was an amazing gardener and used to open her garden for the national trust, but unfortunately I didn't inherit that skill. Saying that I have had loads of raspberries already, I have onions, carrots, brocolli, brussel sprouts (green grapes of the devil, but my youngest loves them!), strawberries, tomatos and runner beans all coming along. I have harvested my potatoes already although didn't get much. I have rhubarb and blueberries doing well but won't get anything from either till next year and most exciting of all...I have at least 3 pumpkins which have successfully been pollenated (or whatever it is that makes them grow :)). They are the size of a small tennis ball at the moment. Last year was a disaster and I had none so I am really chuffed! Anything that grows with my collie charging around is a true miracle :) Next year I'm going to get more containers as my tomatos are in the shade and are about a month behind everyone else's!

Sounds like you are achieving what you set out to do purplefowler - put food on the table for your family - and it sounds like you're having fun with it.

Perhaps your granny realized the importance of compost, compost, compost, lol. The successful gardeners whose efforts yield the most seem to be the ones who do all the extra work - specifically, aerate, compost, weed and organically fertilize. I, for one, tend to throw plants (rarely seeds) into the ground and just water them til they yield. I get what I set out for, but my yield could be so much better and tastier if I went the extra mile.

purple, I think you are being modest! I know for a fact that Brits just have more of a knack and love for gardening than we do, whether it's flowers or produce. The most unexpected places (the local mechanic, the most urban row/terraced home, all paved) will have lovely potted things. Also, I have to stress how difficult it can be to grow tomatoes successfully there...... I know, I tried!

Fudgey, maybe it's the soil. When I plant tomatoes, I plant them in large pots with a mixture of perfect soil (according to Mel Bartholomew, author of Square Foot Gardening):
1/3 compost
1/3 peat mostt
1/3 vermiculite
The vermiculite is the tricky ingred. It has to be super coarse like you can get from a swimming pool supply. I had to drive about 22 miles to find it for mine. Could also maybe find it at a nursery supply. Even Mel states in his book that it is hard to find. I wish we were close in mile, I would give you some.
