Looked all over today for a suitable coffee stirrer straw to no avail. Finally ended up using that tube that comes with a can of like WD40... it hadn't been used.

Then! Ha!

I just now discovered that the Q-Tips from Aldi's are made with a hollow plastic tube that is the perfect size! These cost maybe a dollar for over a hundred. LOL, the tubes even come in different colors too!

Have Fun

& Thanks for the great mod!

I tried this mod as well using a straw from a can of air. I have been using 3 different carts for the past week or so. 1 cart has the tube only tapered at the bottom, 1 cart has the tube tapered at both ends, and 1 cart has no tube.

The results so far is I do notice the cart takes a drop or two extra but I see no difference between the 3 in the length of time I can use them before refilling.

Once I find some 2 hole coffee stirrers I'll try that as well. It does drive me nuts how short the lifespan is on a cart before having to switch or refill. I'll keep trying and let you guys know how it worked for me.

OK, this doesn't surprise me, but I seem to be the only person not overly impressed with this mod yet. Based on my interpretation of the info in this thread, I took one of the double straws and cut it lengthwise so I would have one thin straw. I cut both ends at an angle.

The first time I used it, I immediately had a terrible burning plastic taste. Took the straw out, didn't NOTICE any melting. I probably should not have tried this the first time with a new juice flavor... a flavor that I turn out to hate, which may have had something to do with what I was tasting.

But being worried about the straw being too long, I've shortened it more in a couple other carts (rests BELOW the top of the stuffing) and I don't notice much results.

Is my straw too short? Is my straw too thin? Any tips?

KreeL, could you explain that a little? Blow it out before you put it in the cartridge, or from time to time while using?

I keep the edge of the straw just below the 'stuffing line' off to the side. I use the flat one and it doesn't interfere at all with the atom. Now once in awhile I accidentally drip on the side with the straw, and it can get a little in and clog the holes. Usually after a couple draws it's okay, but everytime I rebuild the cart with fiber, I just clean the straw and re-use it (especially when I have a perfect size one :) ).

As for your last question, you have to remember to leave an ample 'air pocket' at the bottom of the cart. If you forget that, the straw has no meaning other than a funny internal decoration. Hehehe. Also, make sure some juice or stuffing doesn't block the straw very much at the top. As long as you have an air pocket at the bottom, and the straw isn't blocked or too short, it should allow the proper airflow to accelerate your vaping pleasure.:)

You know I just thought of something while I was doing this mod that isn't totally related to the mod at all. You know the leakage problems? Could throwing an O-ring around the cart help at all?

***EDIT***

So I just tried a new cart mod, well not new but a different take on this one.

Supplies needed:
Single Barrel (white w/ red stripes) Coffee Stirrer
Scissors
Needle or staple
And your various cart, fillers...

1. Take your cart filling, clean it and roll it up into a little ball. This is just to get some density back into it.

2. Take the straw, and measure out a length that you want to use, much like the length in the original mod in this thread.

3. Take your needle or staple and poke holes in both sides of the white part of the straw, or red if you feel like it. I got about four on each side. These should be small holes but you could probably make them bigger. They are more for letting juice seep through.

4. Cut the length of the straw off and put an angle on one side. I used a triangle angle aka a "double angle".

5. With your balled up cart filler, start spreading it out flat approx. the length of the straw length.

6. Wrap the filler around the straw, leaving the angled end exposed and the non angled side a bit under the end of the filler. You will have to hold this is place as you insert it into the cart.

7. Insert the filler/straw into the cart to desired position. Take a paper clip and push the straw down under the filler just so that it won't touch the atomizer parts.

FILLING:

I just dropped around the sides of the filler at first, but then dropped directly in the center where the opening of the straw is located. The juice will seep down and hopefully through the little holes and into the filler. Now if it pools at the bottom of the cart, simply holding the cart connected to the atomizer upside down should let the liquid fall down back into the cart material.

You should notice that when you drop right onto the center opening that it will pool a bit, but an air bubble will surface letting the liquid sink into the filler.

My very first hit gave me a great vapor puff with a nice smooth tastey hit!

Please post results!

The point of the straw seems to be to allow air to escape, when you're filling a cart from the top (end closest to battery).

Using a syringe, filling from the bottom of the cart, should have the same effect, but 'in reverse' - pushing the air out the top of the cart, by filling the cart from the bottom with liquid.

Anyone tried both, preferably on a pair of fresh carts, for comparison?

Hahah. I know the Qtips you mean. Are you using the batting or cotton poly off the qtips as well for cart stuffing?! Should work as well right? 2 in 1 find... good'on ya!

I'll def have to try this mod when I get my 510 ...it's in transit!

Cheers all ... this is great!

Incredible this works excellent!!!! Love the vapor and you are right there is a nice smokey tastey hit. This is the way to use the straw!
I like to drip and use a cart. I do not have to drip as much. Take the paperclip and push down the cart filling some and ready to go again.
So far this is the trick for me. Thank you so much.:D

One quick thing, when you are filling your cart after this mod and the liquid seems to pool and not sink/absorb into the filler, simply take a paperclip or needle and poke the straw in the center of the filler. This should open up the airway enough to let air out, bringing the liquid down into the material.

I was getting the nasty burnt taste and wasn't using my 801 as much. Came across this thread and couldn't find a coffee stirrer straw.

Eureka. I opened up a cheap ink pen (like the bic pens) and snipped off the top of the ink tube where there is no ink.

Washed it out with hot water and into my cart after tapering one end. HALLELUJAH! This really works! Instant improvement. Stronger tasting juice, no more burnt taste and my throat isn't hurting anymore.

I don't know what was happening before...perhaps the filler was burning, but it is solved now.

    YAY!

I didn't have any coffee stirrers either, but I did have some q-tips that have the plastic blue tube. Works great. :thumb:

Me too, the q-tips are actually a smaller diameter than the coffee stirrer I got at work....

    Can not BELIEVE the difference!

I'm probably still going to find some of the flat stirrers because I think they'll fit the 901 cart better?

MUCH more vapor....hopefully no more dry burnt taste...

If I'm reading your instructions correctly (really nice job, by the way, very well described), it sounds like the juice should go down into the straw opening and leak out through the holes - is that right? If so... is it at all possible that the juice is actually traveling along the outside of the straw, and thus entering into the filling as per the mod as originally posted?

It just seems like the consistency of the liquid is thick enough that it wouldn't travel well through the inside of a little straw... I have globs of it that stick to the outside of my penstyle carts which gravity won't dislodge. And when I try to transfer liquid from a 10 ml bottle to a 3 ml bottle with a 1/4" diameter opening, I have the stuff squirting back out and running down the sides! :)

If I'm reading something wrong... then, never mind!
