Thanks to those who showed up to speak

City-County Council panel approves smoking ban | Indianapolis Star | indystar.com

The most spirited discussion was over e-cigarettes, which emit nicotine-laced vapor. Users said they’re harmless to bystanders, but anti-smoking advocates said too much still was unknown about potential risks.

A statement issued by Greg Conley, legal director of Consumer Advocates for Smoke-free Alternatives, which supports the use of e-cigarettes, said the committee “relied on inaccurate and misleading information.”

You guys did an AWESOME job and the vapers in Indiana owe you for showing up to speak for them!

It amazes me the circular logic they use. They discuss (at length) the "level playing field" and how exempting some places to allow smoking would be unfair to those who cannot allow smoking, yet turn around and claim that smoking bans don't negatively affect bars and businesses. If people prefer non-smoking businesses, why would non-smoking businesses suffer if there are businesses who allow smoking??

You're welcome Brew (James here). As you know, I had very much the same problem you did, I suck at those too. But at least we tried.

Like I told you after the meeting, and CASAA knows, I had a complete statement to throw out there but in light of the committee's obvious ignorance on the subject, decided to shoot from the hip and address issues discussed as well as I could. Probably not the best idea but since the committee had already dismissed most contact they've had on the subject as being 'lobbied" I thought it best not to appear as another spokesperson.

Thankfully I did get in the benefits I've experienced as well as third-party reaction to my use.

Battle lost but the war rages on.

Actually watching myself stammer was painful. I really don't ever want to do that again but you know I probably would if needed. Giving a reporter a story is no big deal but seeing those 4 cameras really sent me over the edge. My wife gave me a hug while watching it as I never have trouble speaking to a familiar crowd. Oh well, I couldn't let the vapers in Indy down even if some of the people I called wouldn't commit. Thanks big time for being there capt.n.coke & James, It made it a little better even if it was painful. I ran from the parking lot, got through security and then ran the stairs to just make the meeting. I barely caught my breath prior to being called to action but a year ago I wouldn't have been able to speak for another 30 minutes. Now I'm gonna sit back and enjoy my Capt.n.DietCoke  Brew

Thanks Kristin, for your earlier help as well :)

What really bugs me is their jump to ban an unknown. What they are saying essentially is: 'Well, we don't know if they are equally hazardous or not, but let's assume they are guilty before proved innocent'.

What a horrible, dangerous precedent!

I just wanted to thank Brew1961, capt.n.coke, and eSC for standing up for all Hoosiers.

I know these things start in one location and then spread like a viral infection and it is only a matter of time before it comes to Howard county where I live.

At the meeting we have coming up on 4/28 on Indy's south side, I would like to be able to buy each of you a drink.

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/hoosier-vapers/282891-hoosier-vapers-meetup-4-28-a.html We are still in the beginning stages of getting a social group started so we can share knowledge and experiences, like these issues. There was a low turnout at the first meeting, but I think it's important that we keep trying if for nothing else than to keep abreast of the political climate.

Hope you can make it, otherwise I won't be able to buy you a drink.

It's on my calendar now, I'll certainly try to make it. Hopefully I won't have a gig that weekend :)

in light of the committee's obvious ignorance on the subject, decided to shoot from the hip and address issues discussed as well as I could.

I've been toying with an idea that I really think needs to be initiated - flash cards or bullet points that people can take with them to these things, which name specific objections and give the true answers. If they are all pre-written, people can just print them out and adjust their comments according to what they already have heard in the meetings and/or get together with other members and decide who is going to make which points - so all points get covered in the short speaking times.

You did an excellent job on your own - you need to know I was really impressed that you decided to stray from your prepared comments and attempt to address the falsehoods that you heard! It made me wish that we had been able to prepare you better for that and having pre-written statements for all possible may have helped. Also, I think statements pre-written by CASAA could empower people to act in more of an official capacity as CASAA reps and have a little more "power" so-to-speak. Had a board member been there, we could have asked to speak again after the misrepresentations made by the Smokefree Indy woman. Members who feel confident in their information should also be able to ask for the same courtesy.

Please remember that this was just the first step! Indy vapers now must contact the rest of the council before it goes to vote in about 2 weeks (this was just the committee vote.) We may be able to sway other members of the council to vote this down if we can get them the correct information. CASAA is already putting together a letter to the rest of the council. if you can - contact all of the Indy vapers you can and get them to band together to fight this! Make sure they strongly state that they are former smokers who use e-cigarettes to maintain their quit and are definitely NOT industry lobbyists!

Oh gawd, that means you saw the video (ugh) haven't been able to bring myself to view it just yet. :p

At any rate, I think the notes idea is fantastic. The only problem I see is the duplicating the reaction the committee had as it related to the contact they received. Their impression of being lobbied clearly turned them off.

My hind-sight analysis of the meeting has me thinking of ways to avoid that. If I can be any help at all to that process I'll certainly weigh in.

I should have written this much earlier, but better late than never. Thank you to all of you who made it out to speak up for the rest of us that could not make it to the committee meeting. You all did an excellent job, and I am proud of all of you. My most sincere of apologies that I could not make the meeting to add to the voice of the vaping community. I did what I could with emails and phone calls from here, but will all in my power to be there whenever possible to support my fellow vapers. Thank you so much for everything you do for the vaping community.

I didn't think anyone sounded bad at all!

And to avoid the lobbying misrepresentation - all you have to do is start out with your personal story and then inform them that you believe in the product so much that you joined CASAA and then explain who CASAA is and what we (including you) do - we are CONSUMERS fighting VOLUNTARILY to get the truth out and do NOT work for the industry.

The whole idea of industry lobbyists for e-cigarettes is laughable. Anyone who knows this industry knows that it's been incapable of organizing into an influential association and is rarely, if ever, involved in fighting local legislation. The only e-cigarette association in existence is the TVECA and they were nowhere to be found in Indy.

Ah! Well there you go! I (and more importantly the committee in question) owe you an apology. Had I had more time, and wherewithal prior to this meeting, to research I would have known that. I should have known that. Would have been a great point to bring up IMO :)

Once again, information is power.

Kristin,
While I would never nay say the actions of CASAA or my fellow attendees, it would be extremely gratifying to have somebody represent us who was a professional speaker on this subject matter. It would be huge to have someone who could nail every inaccuracy in their prepared presentation/statements. This is just a comment and I understand what a great job you folks do with such limited support. I for one would gladly open my house for any CASAA representative who would be willing to come into town. The digs aren't shabby I swear. I'd even provide an insured car during your stay as our property is about 20 miles north of downtown near Morse Reservoir. My wife works from home so somebody is here basically round the clock. Heck if you go to all the expense to come into town, We'd take you out for a nice steak dinner! :thumb: Just an offer! PM if you have any interest. Brew

Unfortunately, there is no other opportunity for public comment. This is why Indy residents need to target their own reps with accurate information to retort the false claims by the proponents of the ban.

But thank you for very much for the offer. It's much appreciated.

To that point, for those that didn't get the email, a short list of representatives and their contact info can be found here on this particular CASAA call to action:

Call to Action: Indianapolis-Marion County, IN

By the way Placebo, the support link in your sig gives a 404 error :)

Okay I understand. :(

I had read the following on Fox59s site and thought we might have another chance:

"The matter will go before the full City-County Council April 16 for public discussion preceding a vote."

Here's that link: Electronic cigarettes could be included in city's smoking ban - fox59.com

*sigh* Well, I guess we know where I'll be on the 16th. I simply will not let this rest.

By the way, I ask everyone to take a look at the comment from "IziaElectricman at 5:42 PM April 04, 2012"

Nasty stuff. I would love to see someone calmly and rationally debunk the arguments they present.
