CASAA is currently looking for nominations for our first annual Cassie ....-Head of the Year Awards! (Yes, it's a cigarette ....-head!)

The Cassie is awarded "in recognition of the most creative truth-telling, incredible inaccuracy and exceptional fact-twisting in tobacco harm reduction." The goal is to call out these groups on their lies and twisting of the truth.

We are looking for CASAA members to submit the most inane, inaccurate statements and outright lies made by the anti-tobacco groups. Post the quote, along with a short paragraph exposing the truth, in this thread or email your submission to board@casaa.org. Winning entries will be featured annually on the CASAA web site!

Let's get the truth out about e-cigarettes and smokeless alternatives!

Linda Rosenthal:

“I got interested in this because I saw all these ads for e-cigarettes, so I did some research,” said Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal, a Manhattan Democrat. “I found what is in the e-cigarettes is a mystery.”

Impossible. A five year old could find out what is in an e-cigarette.

This is the one that takes the cake for me. If this were true, there wouldn't be any humans left on the planet to even have to worry about the effects of second-hand smoke, we would all already be dead.

"Even brief exposure to secondhand smoke can cause cardiovascular disease and could trigger acute cardiac events, such as heart attack."

Of course I would have to nominate Rep. Paul Ray. Way too many quotes to choose from, but I guess I'll go with this one:

“What they’re telling us is their profits, tobacco companies’ profits are a lot more important than the health of Utah children and Utah families, and that is not to be tolerated." (Said of the legislators who voted down his bill.)

The truth is that the legislators saved the health of many Utah families by allowing smokers to choose reduced-harm alternatives. They made an informed and intelligent decision and don't give a horse's hiney about tobacco company profits. In fact, by allowing e-cigs to continue to be readily available, they are keeping profits from the tobacco companies.

Well, it's got to be Prof. John F. Banzhaf III, bragging in this ASH press release about the e-mail that persuaded the NY assembly to vote unanimously for a total ban on e-cigarettes:

"ASH's email noted that the FDA, the only agency both authorized and qualified to evaluate whether e-cigs are both safe and effective, has reported that e-cig use poses "acute health risks," that "the dangers posed by their toxic chemicals . . . cannot seriously be questioned," and that e-cigs have caused a wide variety of potentially serious problems "including racing pulse, dizziness, slurred speech, mouth ulcers, heartburn, coughing, ........, and sore throat." It ruled they are "illegal."
New York Moves Towards Total E-Cigarette Ban

I fear that Prof. Banzahf is never going to get all of what he deserves in this life, but the Cassie would be a start.

How exactly does Representative Ray think tobacco companies profit when "the health of Utah children and Utah families" are effected by tobacco products? Big Tobacco doesn't make money when people get sick or die, but guess who does?? The only way that tobacco companies could conceivably benefit financially from public health is if their customers live longer and healthier lives--but according to Rep. Ray, that cannot be tolerated.
