Here's a new nomination. Cardiologist John Johnstone of Richmond, KY for brilliant use of propaganda techniques.

E-cigarettes included in county smoking ban » Local News » The Richmond Register

Did he convey the truth? Was his speech in the best interests of public health?

Testimonial: In 2008, Johnstone said, the World Health Organization issued this statement...

Name Calling: Nicotine in any form is a poison, Johnstone said. Skin contact, eye contact, ingestion and inhalation of nicotine is hazardous, he said.

False Analogy: The U.S. Surgeon General maintains, “There is no safe level of second-hand smoke.” So, e-cigarette “vapors can be harmful,” Johnstone said.

Faulty Cause and Effect: Although e-cigarettes may produce less nicotine per puff, exposure can be significant if there are many users and they are used longer, Johnstone said.

That last one might possibly be categorized as another false analogy. There is no evidence that exposure to airborne nicotine is harmful in any way. He is ignoring the fact that exposure to elements present in smoke (but absent from vapor) are the cause of the smoking-related cancers, heart, and lung diseases. In fact, this article states that dietary sources can provide more nicotine that environmental tobacco smoke. Abstract from 1995 SRA Annual Meeting

Card Stacking:

  • Numerous quotes (some of which are not quite accurate) from the FDA’s press release, while ignoring the findings in the lab report: No carcinogens or toxic impurities were found in the vapor, and “Nicotine was not observed in cartridges identified as containing no nicotine.”
  • He states that the FDA “analyzed 18 varieties of e-cigarettes,” but the truth is that the FDA tested 12 Smoking Everywhere cartridges and 4 njoy cartridges. And both companies were plaintiffs in the Federal law suit against the agency.
  • Also, the method of testing FDA used on the vapor may represent the exposure to the user, but not the exposure to bystanders after the vapor is filtered through the users’ lungs.
  • A tirade on the evils of tobacco.
