Is it possible to ignore an entire social group?

Though, as a technical side, I have to ask... Why CAN'T this be done? It should only take a few seconds. Add a field for "ignore_group" or whatever and change the "SELECT FROM <variable>" to a "SELECT FROM <variable> WHERE <second varible> IS NOT <query>"

I'm a bit curious about the technical side as well. But vBulletin isn't Free Software, so I can't download it and examine the database and the query building code. The ease/difficulty of doing this will depend on how good a job they did with the database design.

My husband feels the same way as a lot of you do. But I like the social aspect of it too. Personally, I subscribe to the threads I want and occasionally look at What's New. To make it easy I glance not only at the titles but at the 'Social Group' or to see if it's 'Outside'. If it's a vender or group I'm not interested in, I skip it. They will never be able to please everybody. So I just roll with the punches.

I s'pose it's allowed because to disallow it would be wrong, just as disallowing the group with diametrically opposite belief systems (more in line with my own) would be wrong.

There are sub-forums that are pretty much completely off topic, and so large that they deserve their own special forum. I say encourage the people who have issues that aren't vaping related - trolling the forum with outrageous political stuff or religious stuff - to enjoy this forum for their vaping issues and enjoy other more targeted forums for their non vaping issues. That's just my 2 cents.

Now, if there was a way to keep the "Outside" really "outside" but available with a little effort, no harm, no foul. I'm not talking about the occasional off topic post. Some people really have issues (non-vaping issues, I mean) and they troll this forum to get an audience.

Folks, remember that this is a vaping community. Not only is it a place to discuss e-cigs and vaping, but it is also a place for vapers to be able to shoot the breeze with like-minded people.

After you have been here for a while, you will find that you know pretty much everything that you want to know about e-cigs and have said pretty much everything that you want to say about e-cigs. The social side of the forum keeps members here, otherwise, most members would be gone in about six months, or less.

I completely agree with both of you. I don’t think these types of discussions should be off limits at all. I was just wondering if there was a way for me to opt out of seeing them personally. And its not that a thread here and there. it is the sheer volume that I have been seeing recently that caught my attention. I mean congrats to this particular group they seem to be thriving. so kudos to them! I am sure that they and many others find comfort in their discussions and activities and wanted to clarify that I was in no way trying to state that they should be censored or booted off the site.

Do you know how many people would stop coming here if you proceeded with that idea? Then when we need people to help stop banning e-cigs, they will be gone.

The main reason I come to this forum is for its diversity. If it was just talking about vaping and vaping related products, I would have been gone 6 months ago.

That maybe the way you think you want it now, but you have only been here a short time. You will be glad we are still here when your state is hit with a potential ban, and you have the numbers to help fight the ban. To divide us would be our downfall.

I know these complaints are a lot of work for the mods as they are trying to do a complete upgrade on the site... There are a lot of post that I see that I know I would not enjoy so I make a personal decision to use the mouse and not click on the link and instead click on one I like. I feel self contol is much easier. :)

P.S watch out for the ZOMBIES there everywhere being so close to Halloween.

HI SUDDENLY:oops:

Isn't that what the private social forum areas are for? Why make an exception for certain groups on the "new posts" page by allowing their posts there? If I have a group that I'm interested in, I can find them on my own...which I do.

I not only personally find these posts offensive...but I am also concerned that just the title of some of these posts will scare potential vapers away from the site. Had I run into this my first few times here...I would have gone searching elsewhere for information.

How much credibility will this Ecig Forum have with posts discussing "aliens" and "raptures" showing up on the Main page. Sure I could go to "my posts"...but why should I have to change my behavior when I'm not breaking any rules?

I specifically don't feel religious dogma of any flavor belongs on the main page. And I find it strange that the problem cannot be fixed when I've seen various mods bring entire threads to a standstill...and wipe out all content.

And if as you say this is a "place to shoot the breeze with like-minded people" than why have I seen several posts deleted or threads closed for reasons such as..."Chatting" and "Off-topic". Those folks were shooting the breeze, so why did they get deleted?

If you are unable or unwilling to remove social group posts from the main page then in the interest of fairness, you should open it to ALL social groups. Otherwise, it will appear that you have a bias for one group over another and are making an exception for them. I hope that is not the case.

I'm guessing someone hasn't been reading the whole thread...

I already said that The Lounge, the OUTSIDE, and social group forums will be removed from the "Today's Posts" link. I'm sorry if this isn't happening as quickly as some of you would like, but our coder has been absent for a while, and if I tried to do it, chances are I would kill the entire forum.

Once again... this will happen. Have a little patience.

If you are unable or unwilling to do so..in the interest of fairness, you should open it to ALL social groups. Otherwise, it will appear that you have a bias for one group over another and are making an exception for them. I hope that is not the case.

Oh, and it is open to ALL social groups at the moment. It's just that some are more prolific than others.

there is one social group that I too find particularly offensive.... luckily the vast majority of those threads are started by the same person....so I just ignore the few specific people that start ALL their threads....problem fixed

I thought I was being clever and tried to do that since most of the threads are by the same person but it wouldn't allow me since the individual is more than just a member here.

It's fine though I can be patient and I really didn't think this would stir anything up. so to the mods ... Sorry for that.

Looking at some of the thread names provides me intense enjoyment, I find the nuttiness of others to be one of the funniest things about life. No offense, Mr. Mad!!! J/K!!!!!!

Like with the TV, change the channel and you won't see it, if you want to actually see it the choice is yours and yours alone IMO.
