Hi guys. I feel like a noob again (aren't we all). Today I was playing with some premade wires I ordered from Vassili and because they are very thin I wanted to go back to silica in my Penelope and coil the ordinary way ( I've been on microcoils/cotton for over a month now). So I grab this 1.5 ohms wire made a coil of 4 wraps over 3 mm silica with another 3mm on top and cut 2 strands in the channels. This is the way I remember always doing it before. Well dry hit, then flood then dry then flood then 2-3 good hits, flavor down, dry again, playing with liquid control like a monkey. The problem I don't remember if I was like that before. What are the most successful setups are you getting with silica? I'm sure it wasn't that hard before (am I?) :glare: Yankee don't go tell me I told you so on the Penelope that it needs fiddling, it was working fine before, I'm not crazy lol.

No aal you quite correct.
There is no going back from micro coil with Cotton to regular coil on silica, as I discover
For my self.
But the problem is not with the silica It's because you step down from micro coil.
Here is a link to my last post on The ribbon coil thread,it's the last post there.
I think this is the only setup on Ithaka that can satisfy you after cotton:

Ribbon wire micro coil on silica hope it will work for you :)

3mm-2 should be just about right. Did you burn silica with torch? Is it possible your hands had some oil or something? Also make sure to trim extra wick very close to ceramic so there is not a knot of silica right at the top of channel. I like a Bish dual highlander style in Penny with two short coils around 3mm and a 3mm-2 down the channels. It is tight but will fit. Since Ithaka I almost never use Penny anymore (sad). I have not been satisfied with any cotton setups yet. It seems to short-lived and prone to flood for me.

I think part of the issue is once you go cotton, you can't go back to silica! I never used cotton untl about 4 wks ago and I just can't go back to silica now. I tried and it was just terrible.

Aal, you've crossed over. Admit it. Now silica is a bad step child. My setup is at least a premade in a nail, and cotton. When my cotton junks out I still have a way of replacing.

I tried silica about a week or two ago, and yarn just yesterday. Silica told me to fly a kite and yarn told me to just give up and go to cotton. Fiddling on both. No fiddling on cotton. Set it and forget it.

Dark side. Too late for you and silica. :)

I'll be honest for my vaping style I have never had perfect wicking with Silica. With Ody and Ithaka I could take dry pulls to get the saturation level I liked with Penelope I always had to mess with the mouthpiece every 5 or 6 puffs.

I finally decided to go cotton on an ody a few days ago and I doubt I will ever go back. Although if I want to work with microcoils I think I need a wire joiner. My first setup worked great 2 days till I replaced the wick to see how it looked and after that I couldn't get it to stop shorting. So I tried to rebuild and with twisted wires after 4 different coils shorted out I went with a basic twisted wire non micro coil wrapped around a small screwdriver. I might try crimped wires micro coil next time I rebuild but for now it is working great as it is.

There is no real need to go back.
Once set up is working good then all is great.
I don't see a real need to work with silica only.
Not unless you miss somthing with cotton.

Just for metter of curiosity,or to have an alternative set up
some backup method is fine.

So for the fair of comparition
The least is to try both with a micro coil setup.
take out the wire/coil performence from the equasiton.

Silica was not that bad before cotton fashion arrived.
And all those raving reviews a bout silica RBA devices were not made on dry hits lol
Just my thinking.

one more way I can think of to use ribbon wire,
if cotton is a must have case.

hybride wick:

make a regular ribbon coil on single silica wick (better to make it micro coil)
put it diagonal in the rebuildble part and connect the NR's.
cross it from a bove on the oposit diagonal with fluffy cotton,
that will go on the oposit channels.

take a vape,anjoy both world.

very simple to do.

when its time to change, get rid of the cotton, dry burn the ribbon on the remain silica
put new cotton diagonal above and:"keep on going"...(nice song) don't know the name of the singer?

all thing is possible on Ithaka the elder of the camp teach us. :)
